Ring around bottle necks

Post by dna »

Hi

We have had our first wheat beer bottled for about two weeks and it has developed a ring of 'sediment' around the neck ofthe bottle. We were a bit worried so we opened one and had a taste and smell, seems ok.

Has anyone had this problem before?

Cheers

If it tastes and smells fine, it is fine.

It's probably just some remainant break material (some proteins or something).

If the beer is off, you will know about it.

Wheat beers tend to contain a bit of sediment anyway, so just relax and drink.

I had the same problem with my Wheat Beer and was just as worried.
It came out fine though, so you shouldn't have a problem.

Dna,

Did you rack? Or did you go straight from the primary to bottles?

I'm not suggesting a reason, so much as finding out as much as I can from your experience. :-)

I've seen this happen once. It was a Cooper's Sparkling Ale kit, and one bottle out of 29 had a ring of sediment (or something) like you described.

I thought it was wierd when I first saw it, and as it turned out that bottle exploded a couple of days later. I assumed at the time that it was because that bottle might not have been sanitised properly.

Has this happened with all of your bottles or just a few?

Just to let you know, the problem I had was with all bottle. None, yet, have exploded (fingers crossed) though I'm not expcting them too.
And I didn't rack, which I reckon would have solved the problem.

Racking will clear the brew out quite a bit. Just don't make the mistake of using finings.
