Coopers Sparkling - Hops Suggestions?

Post by Beerpig »

Folks

About to put down the following brew

1 Tin Thomas Coopers Sparkling Kit
1.5 kg LME
500gm DME
100gm Dried Wheat Malt

I have the these choices of the Morgans Finishing Hops to pick from, Fuggles, Cascade & Hallertau. Any suggestions?

I am over 200km from my closest HBS so these are my only options

Thanks in advance for any replies

Cheers

Well, being an ale i would have to say either the Cascade (1st choice) or the Fuggles (as 2nd choice) as Hallertau is one of the "noble hops" used in lagers. BUT, I'd give the Cascade my first preference by a "Country Mile".

Beer pig,
from your choices
Fuggles used in English Ales
Cascade used in American Pale ales
Hallertau used in German lagers.

Depends what you want your beer to taste like on which you use, the Coopers SA isn't overly hopped, if you are trying to replicate it then use either the Fuggles or Hallertau as the Cascade has a very specific citrus taste. All the above are good, my personal choice would be the Hallertau, one of my favorites. Bear in mind that the original CSA is bittered and flavoured/ aroma with POR, therefore using any of your selections will differ from the original taste to some degree.

Each to their own, check the linkety link out scroll down to hops for more info on types and flavours.

Thankyou AC, I searched the threads but not the site

Probably not so much trying to replicate CSA as experimenting with things. This is only my second time using extra hops, the first is a Coopers Mexican Cervesa which is currently finishing in the fermenter & will be bottled in the next few days

After reading the link I'm leaning towards the Cascade

Any other opinions are welcome

you could probably mix the cascade and fuggles with some success

haven't done it myself but i know cascade and willamette go well together and willamette is quite similar to fuggles

Thats over 2 kilo of malt. The beer may turn out a tad sweet. You might want to use some bittering hops aswell as your flavouring.

Beerpig,

I've observed before (but never tested my theory) that making a Coopers Sparkling Ale as per the recipe on the can then adding some Cascade hops would result in a beer very much like Little Creatures Pale Ale.

See this thread: http://www.homebrewandbeer.com/forum/vi ... php?t=2247

That kit is being very heavily bittered. It is bittered to brew a 1.050+ beer. It is needing the malt. Of those hops I would use Fuggles or Hallertau. Either would be very nice. Or try Cascade and make 25 litres and use a US yeast like SafAle US-56 or Wyeast 1056 or Whitelabs WLP001 something like that.

I went with the Cascade, thanks everyone (and the US56 yeast)

Best brew so far .................... malt & hops balancing nicely, also has quite a alcohol kick, so not for quaffing

Only about 10 swing tops & 2 long necks left ................ will keep the long necks in the beer vault for later tasting

Cheers
