carbonated kegs left out

Post by lokpikn »

im new to the home brew setup got a few mates getting me into it but cant answer my questions.
If i brew in kegs and get them all carbonated with beer do i have to leave them in the fridge. can i put them on the floor for a few months untill they are needed or will they go bad. this way when one keg runs out ill be ready with a new one also if i can leave them out how can they go for with out going bad.

why would they go bad?

if they are carbonated and/or there is a 'cushion' of CO2 in the airspace of the keg, what could possibly make them go bad?

They will be fine, just try to avoid huge temperature fluctuations and excessive heat.

Also make sure you have as clean beer, as possible when filling the kegs better to have racked to secondary prior to filling the kegs to ensure that most of the suspended yeast has dropped. Purge any oxygen and carbonate as usual before leaving extended periods.

My kegs sit in the shed for around 3 months before they get their turn in the fridge.

If you naaturally condition your kegs, the beer will laast as long as it would last if naturally conditioned and bottled. That is, it should continue to improve for 12 months and still be drinkable up to 3 years.

It is my understanding that if the kegs are force carbonated, they will need to be consumed within 1 month before the beer starts to turn.
There is no such thing as bad beer. There is only good beer and better beer.

thanks Hashie

As i am going to force cabonate them i might have to look at the way your talking about. The force carbonation seems the easy option so to natully carbonate them would be as we do for bottles but in lager dose?

HAs any one left forced carbonated kegs out you know of ?

They last just as well as naturally carbonated kegs.
