No bubbling through airlock.

Have put down a pretty standard brew over the weekend using morgans bitter and cluster hops. Problem is two days after putting it down there is no activity through the airlock, I realise that I have probably got an airleak somewhere, I have checked the lid seal and checked that the tap is in tight etc and figure it must be minor leak somewhere becasue the level in the airlock will remain uneven for around 30 seconds if the fermenter is gently squeezed. I am not worried about keeping an eye on the bubbling to know when the brew is finished because I can use specific gravity checks, But is there a good chance I will get an infection? This fermenter has done around 8 brews so I am wondering where it could have developed a leak from. seal under the lid is in excellent condition (only replaced two brews ago)

i got fed up with the whole bubbling scene and have swtiched to using glad wrap and the o ring from the lid

at least you can see in and tell for yourself if the beer is fermenting - how its going etc

in respect of infection - as long as you have sanitised eveything that has come into contact with the beer then everything should be hunky dory

"it doesn't matter"

are we all being a bit too understanding of poor manufacturing standards that leave sharp moulding-flash edges across the top lip ?

I agree this is why I only use and recommend pail style fermenters they do not have the problem. If a HBS does not have them I make them get them in for me or I don't buy from them. I also do not recommend Coopers or Tooheys starter kits for the same reason, crappy fermenters. If people stoped buying these kits they would very quickly change the fermenter.

Yep my coopers one leaked, then they replaced it, but it still leakes.

Im going Glad wrap for my next brew.

Hmm I put a brew (lager+1.5L malt) in last night, there is no activity through the air lock, but there is heaps of bubbiling foam on top of the wort, BUT there is no condensation on the lid, is this ok? is this because its getting out the leak?

Why not do yourself a favour and READ the sticky my home brew is not fermenting.

It is exactly why the stickys were written to help, without going over and over and over the same topics.

Top words of advice from da damage. If you are sick of your lid not sealing, go the gladwrap. If you put your brew down sanitary, rehydrate your dried yeast, and it all kicks off to a good start......nastys have no chance. Put a pin prick in the gladwrap to allow gases to escape. Once your brew has fermented, theres nothing left for the nastys to get hold of. Its all been chewed up. And the alcohol present, would destroy them anyway.

Having said all of this, i still use my lid and airlock.......only because it still works. The day it doesnt, then i go the glad wrap way !
