TCB American Ale Wetpac

Post by ACTbrewer »

Have this in the fermenter and it just smells AMAZING! It almost smells
'orangey'. Can't wait to give this brew a good nudge. Thanks for the tip Carbonator!

i havent bought this one yet is it the one that comes with the orange peel?
I have the classic oak ale in at the moment and when i put it in it sort of smelt like rotting wood but after almost a week it smells fantastic and the aroma in my shed at the moment is heaven, also when i was cooking it up the missus commented on how nice it smelt, and believe me thats a first as she is not much of a beer lover, i put it down to the quality of their ingredients

Grains will do that for you, you should have seen the reaction of a mate of mine last night when we brewed a grain stout. He was shocked! Such tasty aromas!

The American Ale didn't come with orange peel, just hops and what they called 'American Grain'

I cant wait to try that one, have you done the classic oak yet? You actually get oak chips and they stay in the primary with the hops as well, i think its gonna be awesome when its finished

Without doubt the best smelling/tasting beer I have brewed while still in the fermenter. Only one that would come close was the Munton's Old Conkerwood Dark Ale, which smelled and tasted like a beer version of christmas pudding.

I made an attempt last year but hamburgered the metric conversions and kept rounding things up. My APA came out as an IPA. Was a very fine IPA, just don't admit to it being meant to have been an APA.

APA is a very forgiving style.

Cheers,
Greg

what conversions do you mean as say the malt extract i came up with about 2.7 kg does that sound right?
anyway i know im being a pain but this was how i converted the recipe,( have not done it yet)you may have to check it for accuracy for me!
3kg light liquid malt
250gm crystal grain
25gm northern brewer at 60 min
25 gm cascade at 30 min
25 gm cascade at 15 min
final made up to 22 litres to compensate for rounding.

can you let me know if this sounds accurate as im really interested in doin it.
cheers Leigh

I made several mistakes:
I used Light Dry Malt 2.25Kg
I used pellet hops 30gm N.B. 60 mins
I did a 3 gallon boil, but that was Imperial gallons (14L) rather than US gallons (11L)

The Pellet hop gave me higer utilisation.
The lower boil gravity also gave me higher utilisation.
I had rounded up my hop rate.

I had a nice beer, it just wasn't how I planned it. It was not an unpleasant way to learn.

Lethal, your numbers look ok.

Cheers,
Greg

What boil volumes are you guys doing? 3kg of LME is a lot to add to a <15L boil. You could cut the amount in half & add the remainder at the end of boil? Would save you adding so much hops in your 1st additions. & cut down on the kettle caramelisation & darkening of the beer.

2 weeks in the bottle. Carbonated a bottle over the last week, tried tonight.
If this isn't one of the best beers I have ever drunk then I'm a John Howard loving, muslim porn star.
Absolutley fargin delicious. Still has that great orange/sweet flavour, and I imagine will only get better.
