500ml bottles...

Post by nova »

Hello guys,
im new to forum and kinda new to brewing,
i've made a hand full.
Currently i'm brewing a coppers pale ale using a recipe i found on the site.
everything is going well and the question i have is,
given im from a german family we drink a alot of a german wheat beer called Shoffhoffer which are 500ml bottles.
Ive used them before in previous brews however im not sure about the amount of drops/sugar i am to use for them when bottling.
Is it too much for 2 and not enough for 1,
given they are not a stubby nor a long neck?
I was just wondering if anyone has used similiar bottles when bottling, and how i should go about the bottling process.
Thanks in advance,
Aaron.

Bulk Prime. Just do a search on it, it's been covered in plenty of threads.

If you really don't want to buy an extra fermenter or a blue cube, then it is possible to get a measure that has sugar doses for 330ml, 500ml and 750ml on it.

Agree 100% Krusty on the bulk prime thing its the only way to go, try it and you will never go back, your local brew shop has the sugar measurers that krusty is talking about and they do cater for your 500ml bottle but seriously consider bulk priming

thanks for you input guys and sorry i didnt do more of a search...
I do have a measurer here but not sure how much would go into the bottles.
What kinda of sugar would you put in if your not using the carbo drops?

Theoretically you dont but its deffinately alot better if you do as you need to give it a stir and would risk stirring up the sediment whereas if you have the second then you simply rack onto your priming solution and you can bottle down to the last drop without worrying bout the sediment.

Ordinary white sugar is fine or you can use dextrose, malt etc
if using the later ones then you would have to do more of a calculation though as the measure probably wouldnt be enough, no problem with ordinary white sugar though

About 5 grams for a 500ml bottle will put you in the ballpark.

Alot of the beers I do with carb drops seem to be a bit over carbonated in a 375ml with one drop.

I reckon 1 drop in a 500ml would be OK if you leave it for a couple of months.

Worth a test if you can't be bothered bulk priming. I've done one drop in a 750ml for stout and in 3 months there's plenty of fizz.

It depends how carbonated you like them, but the figure I hear around the place is 8 grams per litre, which would be 4 grams per 500mL bottle.

You can grab a 25L fermenter type container with a tap from bunnings for about $15

25L may not be enough for primary but it is great for secondary and bulk priming.

Also rip out the O ring from the lid and use gladwrap instead of the lid

I have a whole stack of (unused atm!) Grolsch (473ml) and Schwelmer Pils (500ml) bottles that I use. I haven't bulked primed anything yet (both my fermenters are usually busy!), but when I prime, I tend to just use a slightly heaped half teaspoon worth of dextrose.

It's not exact, but it's definitely worked for me so far :D

Agree with you rwh, 8 grams sugar per litre, so 4 grams (sugar, white) per 500ml.

I use Bundaberg Sugar sachets (quoted as approx 4g per serve) if bottle priming, or 8g/L if bulk priming. The latter appears to be more accurate, as the sachet contents appear to be variable!

I use Grolsch or Schwelmer swingtops (473ml or 500ml - no noticeable difference carbonation wise) for the convenience. Self capping - absolutley brilliant!!
