Is This a Beer ?

Post by BeerKiller »

A few weeks ago I boiled up 500g of honey, juice of 1 lemon and some left over hops (10-15g) in 4.5litres and pitched lager yeast (cos I had some)
It fermented out for about a fortnight O.G. 1028 and S.G. 1.000
Well I've just tried one out of interest and it...

Looks like lemonade, clear and lots of tiny bubbles
Smell like ginger beer, but not very sweet at all
Tastes like a dry cider
More like a sparkling wine than a beer
I dont know the guidelines for mead, but I'm guessing this isn't.

I was wondering what I have made here, if anything.
Any clues ?

Sounds like a tonic to have when you've got a cold. Honey, lemon and alcohol. You can't go wrong

Yes,

I would call it a mead.

There is a standard of identity for beer (wow got to use that phrae twice today), mead is bit more open

Thanks, I'll call it my "Medicinal Mead" and then probably put it in the back of the medicine cabinet for winter coughs and colds.

Looks like some type of shandy.

There is a hybrid mead/beer style called braggot.

I've been looking to make a batch of mead to see what it's like, I'm not sure there are any commercial examples available here. Although the cost is a bit high for a full size batch, maybe I'll go for a smaller experimental size.

Hipone

I have a couple of 5 gallon recipies that use fruit as well as honey. It does seem a bit pricey but I figured it would be OK (40 bucks a batch maybe)

Was thinking of giving it a go this summer. When we get some fresh stuff like Strawberries

Can post the recipies if you like
