what to make with my buy off Ebay

Post by yamaroo »

Hello All iam still new to the homebrew game so I need some help with what I can do with the following.

I won a full kit on eBay and picked it up this afternoon the ingredients that came with it are as follows

1X 1.7kg Morgan's Royal Oak amber ale
2X 1.5kg Morgan's Malt extract
1X Bottle of Fuggels Hops
1X Bottle of Golding Hops
1X Pack of Irish moss
1X Pack of Safale S-04 Yeast
1X 500g bag Crystal malt
1X1kg Bag of 50/50

Now I have only done a couple of brews that have turned out quite well I might add.

So can I have some recipes and suggestions please?

Thanks

OK, I'll make one up for you.

royal oak tin
1.5kg malt extract (I'm assuming it's liquid)
250g crystal
10g Goldings @ 10 mins
10g Fuggles @ flameout

Should make a nice tasty English Amber Ale.

1. Get a pot, put 2L of 80 degree C water in it.
2. Crack the 250g crystal (if it's not already). Do this with a rolling pin or mortar and pestle. Then add it to a grain sock, or some old pantihose that you've boiled to remove the dye. Then put this into your water, and leave it there for 20 minutes.
3. Lift the grain sock out, and pour some more hot water through it to wash out any remaining sugars.
4. Add the malt extract.
5. Bring to a low boil.
6. Add the 10g Goldings, watching for boilover. Have a glass of cold water handy to quench it if it looks like it's going to boil over.
7. Boil for 10 minutes, then add the royal oak tin and stir it till it dissolves, then add the 10g Fuggles, remove from heat, put on the lid.
8. Half fill your fermenter with cold water, preferably through a clean sieve or something to aid aeration.
9. Pour the contents of your pot into the fermenter, mix it up.
10. Top up to 23L, pitch your yeast onto the surface.
11. Airlock it, then have a beer. Keep it 18-20 degrees C for best results.

Wondering if you've got any tasting notes on this one yet Yamaroo? I'm going to put down something very similar in the next few days and want to make sure the added hops balances out the sweetness of the crystal. Do you remember by chance if you used Liquid amber malt or pale malt?

Thanks mate
