Red Ale Recipe

Post by cody »

Hey,

I know theres a few topics on Red Ales but as this is my second brew I really need help with the specifics...I really do want this to colour-wise be a 'red' ale, not a 'amber' ale. Has anyone here done a red before(and got the colour right)?

Firstly, what would be a good can to get to provide the base for the beer?

I understand that usually you would use alot of crystal with some roasted barley and a little bit of choc but what exactly would you recommend in grams?

Also, what kind of hops for aroma and bittering?

Thanks heaps in advance!

Chris, what yeast did you use for this? Looks like a good formulation :)

It tastes pretty good so far.

Note the changes in red to the hop amounts- I didn't check my records before posting.

And I used the coopers re-cultured, as I realised too late that I didn't have any British ale yeasts left.

Heh heh...

When single shines the triple sun,
What was sundered and undone
Shall be whole, the two made one,
By Gelfling hand, or else by none.

Cody,

my first Partial was a Red, a bloody nice drop imho if not a bit strong, not a quaffer if you know what i mean.

btw, for 'Light Whole Grain' read Pale Malt.

terminology was a bit vague when i kicked off mucking around with Grain

Thanks Chris it was very nice, the added bonus of it being my first Partial and discovering the freshness that Grain can give to a brew made it all the better.

that pic was after only a week in the bottle btw.

A woman walks into a bar and orders a double entendre, so the bartender gave her one !
