is some sort or filter better than whirlpooling? like the pickup tube with holes drilled in it?

Even if you have a filter, a quick whirlpool is still a good idea. I have seen pics of filters that are clogged with hop flowers etc. I use a hop bag, so no dramas here.

Would not however try this with my stainless steal pot. Still thinking how I will (if at all) get a hole into that one.

Cheers,

It's not as hard as you think,

Center punch location, start with about a 3 mil. drill bit, LOW rpm's ( use variable speed drill), lots of pressure ( make the bit cut), when you feel the bit start to break through ease off the pressure and baby it through ( if it grabs you are pushing to hard and DO NOT increase rev's when you are trying to break through - this may take several attempts) , step up in drill sizes by 3-4 mil. till you get the size you want. If the stainless start's to turn the colour blue and the bit starts to smoke YOU WILL have a problem , so if you want to play it safe have someone standing close with a spray bottle of water to keep it cool - but I don't think you will.
I have done this with a cordless drill with no problem's .

First up is a hoppy APA.

Second will be a chocolate oat porter.
Is that a pot or the bottom half of a wheat silo with a lid

After experiencing a malt boilover in a smaller pot, I never want to see one again.
Just as others have said, was boiling along for over 45 mins supervised, turned my back for one minute and whoooshka. Sticky burned malt everywhere.
Won't happen so easily in an 80L kettle!

Yeah, that happened to me the other night... phone rang, and boom! Sticky burned mess everywhere. :(

Took me like three days to soak and scrub the black scorched malt off the inside of the pot. That'll teach me to fix the big electric element on my stove... I've got too used to the little ones. :o

Still, I'm hoping my Hoegaarden comes out ok.
