Why do kit yeast packets have numbers on them?

Correct. It's generally a packed-on date or use-by date. Sometimes in code (if you can call it that, as it's not exactly rocket science), as with the 06245 example, above.Cortez The Killer wrote:from memory

i think something like 06245 would be the year ie 06 and the 245 being the 245th day in the year
Cooper's beer used to be dated this way in print on the bottle. Now the bottle-conditioned ales have a "best after" date.
