Lager Yeast

Post by Beau »

Predicted answer: "Do a search"
I'd love too, but I'm tired from Christmas shopping.

Anyway, my question is, is it absolutely necessary to do a yeast starter when using Saflager? I'm putting down a lager tomorrow and I was wondering if I could just pitch directly into the wort at around 12°C because I'd really prefer to. I know I'd benefit from making a starter but to be honest I can't really be fagged.

Sound OK?

I don't really like the idea of starters with dry yeast. It can be counter productive IMO.
If pitching at 12c you'll get a nice fast start pitching 2 packets.
Alternatively you could pitch 1 packet at a higher temperature (around 22-24) & wait until fermentation starts & then bring the temperature down.
I personally prefer to pitch 2 packets at colder temps.

All good suggestions, thanks. I'll make a decision before I brew it up in the morn.

Chris is spot on don't make a starter with dried yeast, but rehydrating is an excellent idea.

Ive only started rehydrating recently, does shorten the lag time quite a bit IMO.
