Raise a glass to Bertie's revival

AND, on a distinctly more worldly subject, Foster's is to be congratulated on its decision to reinstate Ballarat Bitter - albeit briefly - after an absence of 15 years.

The move, which originated with sailors aboard the HMAS Ballarat and was conveyed to the company by Ballarat MHR Catherine King, does depart from tradition however in that Ballarat Bertie will now be out and about on

a stubbie and not the long neck.

Readers old enough to remember the original will recall Ballarat Bitter is a great drop that enjoyed a national following until its demise in the wake of corporate reforms.

While, at this stage, there are only plans to sell the bitter locally it would be excellent indeed if Bertie was to fly the flag for our city in hotels across the nation once more.

Surely it's just repackaged Melbourne or VB or Foster's?

Hi, definately not a melbourne or vb but from what i've heard a far cry from the original. I'm too young to have drunk any of the original stuff but this was quite a nice drop, very smooth on the way down.

Forgot to say bout the price on the bertie slabs. Most places were selling them for $35 to $40 a slab but towards the end they were selling at some pubs for $50 and even $60 a slab at one place in town. Some blokes i work with bought a few slabs and still have slabs they were keen to prosper from. Not my deal but i'd say there are a few still floating around. Wouldn't doubt if they bring it back again at some stage down the track cause there was a huge response to it. Most places sold out within the first two days but the suppliers only dropped off a certain amount each week for about three weeks. Was a good drop for sure :!:

Was talking at the Ballarat Home Brew Shop last time

The owner said he knew someone who bought 36 slabs only to find out the cans had a best before date of August 8 2007

So I wonder what CUB Have been playing around with.
