ESB

Post by beermeister »

Has anyone tried the ESB stout kit? The lady in my HBS reckons it needs no additives - its a 3 kg tin.

Did one late last year. The 3kg kit, water to 18 ltrs, yeast as supplied. (Safale) very very 'just one more....'

If you bulk prime just don't forget that your are 18 not 23 ltrs.

BUT...
For $27, personally I'd go for a Coopers Stout and Coopers Dark Ale, some specialty grain and a safale to 23 ltrs.

Enjoy,

Greg.

While we are on the ESB kits, has anybody tried the Chez Pilsener? I am thinking of trying it for my next brew.

Haven't tried the Czech pilsener, but just bought the ESB stout kit from the HBS.

Didn't get the special yeast though, I'm too much of a tight-arse and the HBS throws in the safale for free. Will give it a go and report back with results.

Ingredients doesn't say anything about hop pellets, but we shall see!

Made the original post on this a while ago, but I recalled that I said I would report back - anyway, the ESB stout was magic - big, strong and nice balance of malt/hops.

I'm putting down one of their 3kg Bock kits tonight, which is only brewed to 15 litres! This will be a big one...

If you want a change I regularly brew the ESB 3 kg Bavarian Lager but use a whitelabs California Ale yeast.

Comes out fantastic and if you propagate the yeast you can get at least six brews out of one phial.

what exactly is involved in using the hops that come with these kits?

i like the sound of a high quality nothing-to-add kit, however im a bit concerned over the hops as i have no experience with them.

thanks

Friar,
I have seen the bavarian lager and was interested, and yeah I reckon an ale yeast might be interesting. Thanks.

Guest,
I did a boil with my ESB kit so the hops were strained when the hot wort went in the fermenter, though this may not be the way everyone does it. Sorry but I am not really qualified to be giving advice!

i did an ESB bavarian lager a few weeks ago, looks and smells ok, currently have a esb czech pilsener brewing at the moment, and will do an esb bock right after. however, trying something different with these, the HB shop man gave instructions as follows, keep brew at about 8 - 12 degrees (i'm using an old fridge) will take about 2 weeks to hit fg, then leave brew at 1 degree for 2 weeks prior to bottling. takes a month in total, hoping its worth the wait.
