I have a plastic bucket with 2 2400W jug elements mounted in it. I only use it as my HLT though, but i sparge at close to boiling. No problems at all...It's a food grade 20 litre bucket from bunnings, around $9 i think. Have used it for 6 brews now. Takes around 30 mins to heat 15 litres to mash temps using 1 element, around 15-20 using both.
I also use the NASA ( or turkey burner, outdoor burner etc) on my (legally obtained) keg kettle, and it's the best ever. Before i bought it i had a 3 ring burner, which took forever to acheieve a boil, and had to run flat out to maintain it.

I've been watching this and threads in 'other places' with interest.
I took my new 75 litre boiler for a run this last weekend. I started with 16.25 litres for a 90 minute boil on the Smeg gas stovetop. (I'm starting small until I get my sea legs.) I used the big burner and the small one next to it. I got the thing to boil in about 20 minutes and maintained a decent boil throughout.
All was well until just about the finish when I happened to touch the granite benchtop next to the stove. It was too hot to touch! There was instant agreement that before its next outing I would make alternative heating arrangements.
I'm seriously tending towards electric heating elements. I think they work out cheaper in not too much time. I'm not quite ready to chop holes in my big boiler and install elements, but one or two 2400W immersion heaters hooked over the side or from a suitably gimcrack support along with some cheap and nasty insulation around the side is looking pretty good.
