hops in corona recipe

Post by melbourne man »

I bought a corona recipe from brew craft the other day which has in it,

a can of brewcraft mexican cerveza
a can of their no 12 brew booster
500g of japanese blonde malt
dry enzyme
muntons premium gold yeast

i swapped over the saflager because i can't keep the temperature down that low.

i reckon this brew won't have much flavour so i want to pack it full of hops. what sort would be best? i was thinking cascade or maybe some saaz.

I would go for a lighter noble hop like tettnanger...
Coopers.

Noting the hop bittering present in the kit, an additional 10IBU's of Perle or Chinook for bittering and two flavour/aroma additions of Saaz with 15 to go and 5 to go in the boil should do the trick...

For a very popular Corona part mash clone - have a look at this recipe on Beertools.com:

A light hand with the chinook would work. Any c hops will basically. And consider a tett or haller or something.

Fuggles or Goldings?! A little out of style :)

I'd be surprised to find out that any of the C hops were to style.

The citrusy American varieties. Cascade, Chinook, Centennial...

Last time I checked, most mex beers were brewed with a combination of c hops and noble.

taken from wikipedia's article on hops:
Noble hops

The term Noble hops traditionally refers to four varieties of hop which are low in bitterness and high in aroma. They are the central European cultivars, 'Hallertauer Mittelfrueh', 'Tettnanger', 'Spalter', and 'Saaz'.[4] They are each named for a specific region or city in which they were first grown or primarily grown. They contain high amounts of the hop oil humulene and low amounts of alpha acids cohumulone and adhumulone, as well as lower amounts of the harsher-tasting beta acids lupulone, colupulone, and adlupulone. Humulene imparts an elegant, refined taste and aroma to beers containing it.

Their low relative bitterness but strong aroma are often distinguishing characteristics of European-style lager beer, such as Pilsener, Dunkel, and Oktoberfest/Märzen. In beer, they are considered aroma hops (as opposed to bittering hops); see Pilsner Urquell as a classic example of the Pilsener style, which showcases Noble hops.

As with grapes, land where the hops were grown affects the hops' characteristics. Much like Dortmunder beer may only within the EU be labelled "Dortmunder" if it has been brewed in Dortmund, Noble hops may only officially be considered "Noble" if they were grown in the areas for which the hops varieties were named.

'Tettnanger' hops come from Tettnang, a small town in southern Baden-Württemberg in Germany. The region produces significant quantities of hops, and ships them to breweries throughout the world.

Must be true then. :-)

My experience is that 25g of cascade in a tea does wonders with a coopers cerveza tin + 1kg of ldme.

I did a Coopers Mex with Fresh NZ "Belgian" Saaz, seriously that's whats on the packet, and it turned out very nice indeed.

I did mine from memory with just 1kg of Dex  , I know people sledge it without malt on here, anyhooooow, I did it with Dex as I wanted it as close to Mexican (close to water) and let the 'Fresh' hops do their work.

Cheers

Corona is made from 100% Galena hops.

Or to be more correct - It's made from 100% Galena hop extract & bittered with tetrahop.

Another topic reawakens.

Are those the same as the purple galena hops from Newtown?

For a Corona? Go the lager if you can keep the temp down. Otherwise go for a less fruity ale strain.
