Brewiser Corn Syrup

Threw a Coopers Dark Ale down with some Left over brew enhancer + dark malt + goldings hops and a tin of this Brewiser Liquid Sugar. I only bought it because I hadnt seen it before and I believe in giving everything a chance. I note it says its contents are "Maize Starch" which I think translates to that High Fructoce Corn Syrup Yanks throw in all their food. It was a very clear thinnish syrup. Are they having me on pretending this is a homebrew product or is it decent? It was only about 5 bucks. I have heard that corn syrup gives large head bubbles and therefore get a weak head ? Experiences? Regardless I'll drink it - just havent seen it mentioned on the forum.

I have heard that corn syrup gives large head bubbles and therefore get a weak head ?
Reverse this Maltodextrin or Corn syrup is used to improve the head and body of the beer.

Can't help with the Liquid Sugar as I have never used it.

So if corn syrup improves head this one should be a beaut as there is plenty in there, just wonder what the taste will be like. I had never seen this product in the HBS shop either but picked it up at Kmart of all places.

That is of course if the single ingredient "Maize Starch" is in fact corn syrup...and like I said it wasnt a starchy powder but a clear syrup. Any food nutritionists out there?

OK then - i'll see how it goes and advise. Had an interesting primary fermentation though - went off quickly from about 22deg C for about a day and pretty much stopped - took a reading and was still high 1020 ish - then the beer in the test tube started bubbling away and the wort was back into in a few hours too. Still smells fine out the airlock. One thing i did differently was not put too much boiling water into the fermenter to keep the temp down as its still warm here. I dont think I mixed up the sugars or dissolved well. Could this cause a layer that the yeast had trouble getting through until I broke it by tapping off some? probably not - just one of those yeasty things.

You were right db, that stuff ruined my stout. No body and it tasted like Vegemite.

Just to clarify the maltodextrin/corn syrup I'm referring to is the powdered type supplied by HBS. I would not use more than 500g in a brew as it will leave an off taste.

Despite the bad rap on the corn syrup - the Dark Ale turned out amazingly well. I was trying to imitate a Tooheys Old and came really close - by accident I suppose. There is a tart taste to begin with (but so does the real Old) and follows smoothly. My father in law who is a serious "old" man gave it a thumbs up and usually scoffs at HB. I will be making that recipe again for sure.

Funny, I have just done a brew with one and it worked out quite nice. At $3 a tin on special, I'm not going to complain.
