Grolsch swing tops

Post by Zuma »

Are they any good as a homebrew bottle?

Can the seals be replaced?

What would be a fair price to pay for each bottle second hand?

:?

They're excellent for holding yeast starters in too - you can vent off the excess CO2 without having to go through heaps of bottle tops!

Trough, how do you think the Oztop caps would go for holding yeast starters anyway?

Great for HB bottling. Don't need a bottle capper if you have enough of them.

Buy them @ $4ea from 1st Choice, or $5ea from Dans. Not a bad drink, and then rinse. Sanitise on bottling day. Actual bottling process is so much easier than for traditional bottles & caps.

Monitor the condition of the seals. They won't last forever. Am experimenting with turning the seals inside out after about 4 bottlings. Also experimenting with removing some seals & storing them in a bottle of water until required. Appear to be benefiting from this treatment, but time will tell.

You can buy replacement seals on the Net. Only purchased one pack so far - appear similar to cheap tap washers - suspect that's what they will perform like. Will look at an alternative supplier's washers next time.

I like them a lot. Easier to bottle - not quite so easy to clean, but not so bad it detracts.

I have a slab holding some stout which is intended for long-time aging. I'm also trying to acquire a fleet of Schwelmer bottles.

I will probably end up buying a crown-seal capper and doing that thing, but if I had, oh, a thousand swingtops...

I'm a big fan of the swing top too. A mate managed to pick me up 2 doz at a garage sale for nix!! Then just last week my local BWS had a special on and they were going out the door for $2 each (with beer in) so grabbed another 2 doz.

I got ~40 empties from a recycling depot, 50c each.

They aren't supposed to do that, but some of the operators take swingtops and long necks aside and make a little extra cash in hand from aspiring homebrewers.

I'm trying to interest my mates in drinking Grolsch or Schwelmer. They're all either cheapskates or taste-challenged... *sigh*
