Beerlovers,

At which sport is beer most joyfully consumed?

In my experience Test Match Cricket is the obvious answer - 7 hours of play, 5 days in a row enables the punter ample lager sample time.

Not to mention cricket in Australia is played in 30C plus temps.

Of course, if one barracks for the Aussies where success is found before 5 days are complete, one needs a few coldies in the fridge to come home to.

Could there be a better sport at which to consume beer?

I also find any football match in which Collingwood is being beaten is also a good reason/opportunity for a beer.

But granted, Test cricket has to be the ultimate marrying of sport and drinking beer.

It's just a pity that they no longer play until the game's won. Imaging the drinking that could be done if the match went for a fortnight!

A game of rugby, I'm looking at an easy tray (4 schooners), AFL a tray and a half, but the cricket...

Although I do find a one dayer more conducive to beer drinking. I just find I'm amongst kindred spirits.

Although why is it that a wicket is taken or a six is hit when I am at the fridge?

Or an amazing mark,... or break away try,... or a goal from 35 meters back etc.

But test cricket is the worst for the nothing much happening, I'll just grab a round, only to find sudden excitement when my back is turned.

Nice. Reminds me of a one dayer a year or so ago. We (about 6 of us) were seated right behind some other kindred spirits (read - pissheads). They had a rule that if you were at the bar or making room for beer and a wicket was taken you had to skull a beer and go and get another. If, whilst getting the refill another wicket was taken...

When Australia is bowling against Zimbabwe, a shout or a leak can be a dangerous event. Let's just say the boys were pretty merry by stumps.

in terms of stupidity the WACA took the cake during recent ODI's in Perth!

If you wanted a beer you queued up to pay then joined another line to collect, sounds reasonable so far. However they didn't geive a token or anything and the boys soon worked out that if you asked for 4 beers they gave you four regardless of how many you'd paid for!

Let's just say it was a very messy day and not overly expensive either!

Your posts remind me of a day at the 2002 Boxing Day Test at the MCG where about 20 or 30 blokes on a bucks day arranged for 2 girls in hot pink bikini's to run back and forth to the bar all day keeping them in constant supply of beer.

Perhaps those of you concerned about missing some of the action might employ similar means!

I vaguely recall reading that the killjoy governments tried to stamp out the beer wench by requiring them (the wenches) to have an RSA ticket, and under OHS the drinkers to supply hats, sunblock etc.

Generally made the whole thing too bloody hard

I used to work at the WACA and Subiaco Oval (early 90's), so we catered for footy as well as the cricket fixtures. One thing I remember is that the Docker's games always involved the greatest amount of beer consumption, and once we ran out and had to order in emergency kegs. Unfortunately, once you run out of beer in a stadium you can never catch up with demand again.

What about back in the day, during the golden era of cricket (Lillee, Thomo, Marshie etc etc) ? At the SCG they had a rule about bringing beer into the ground. You were only allowed to bring in a case of beer per person.

Twenty four quiet ones to get you through a day. Wish I was old enough to appreciate it.

Reminds me of Barry Mackenzie trying to get his suitcase full of beer cans through customs in the UK and declaring them as "personal effects."
