So is a fermenter lid. Glad wrap works a treat, anyone I know who has given it a go has not gone back to using a lid and airlock.

Completely agree, gladwrap is great. You can see everything and it's 4 less things to clean and sterilise. I wish I'd gone to it earlier.

The plastic on a fermentor lid is a lot thicker than glad wrap. I have used glad wrap before but have gone back to using a lid and airlock.

Have you ever had reason to believe glad wrap does a poorer job than a lid? Each to his own

At the risk of asking a question that may, to some, seem stupid (I've seen what can happen)...

Do you sanitise the Gladwrap, or assume that the nice folk at the Glad factory have kept things pretty clean?

Less washing is attractive (in fermenters, not people).

Nah it'll be fine straight out of the pack, just stretch it out and wrap the seal round it.

Thanks Rysa, and (see previous silly question disclaimer) I assume that the excess C02 bleeds out under the seal before the Gladwrap reaches bursting point?

I ask quite a few bout this before i did it, some put a pin prick or two in it but i never have and it gets out just fine.
The seal from the lid that holds gladwrap down isn't that tight, just enough to do the job.

What's the best way to catch a seal - harpoon or net? I did a search on this, but came up with no results. Hope this isn't a stupid question.

Your assumption is correct, the air escape through the path of least resistance, which means it tends to leak slowly out the sides. It is convex shaped but that just means you've got enough co2 in there. It won't burst.

The excess co2 pressure IMO escapes through the glad wrap film.

Wrap some around your face and see if it is really that porous, I'm inclined to think it escapes around the seal, it is not all that important really, it just escapes. I have done brews, in the earlier times, with just a tea towel over them with no worries, we know tea towels are porous!
