Muntons Amber Ale - what hops?

Post by forcetwelve »

hi there all fellow guzzlers...

i'm putting down a muntons amber ale tonight with a mate. it's his first brew, and it's my first amber ale too.

i'm just wondering what hops to use? i have some leftover perle and chinook, should i throw some in for the hell of it?

otherwise it's going to be the muntons kit and 1kg light/dark malt (50/50).

cheers guys!

I'd go perle ahead of chinook.

14g for 20mins.

hey again.

ok this has been bubbling away for 2 days now - i sampled it today when taking a hydro. reading and it tastes a little cidery?

it almost has a fruity taste/aroma... i am wondering if it is infected? this is my first amber so i am unsure what its meant to taste like in its ferment stage.

any ideas?

I'd say it's waaaaay too early to tell. Chances are it tastes cidery cos there's still heaps of unfermented malt in there.

Perfect temp. You don't have any adjuncts in there, so you haven't violated the max 20% after which you need yeast nutrient. It's got all the ingredients to be awesome, sit tight! :)

thanks rwh - you've put my mind at rest. i guess it's just as there is more malt to get through, i'm not used to the taste of the amber!

it looks bloody delicious though! :D
