Tooheys Old - How Cold?

This is one for Wassa.

How cold should you serve Tooheys Old?

Mate of mine drinks a 6 pack (or 2) a day. He served one to me the other day. Ice cold! Being a native Queenslander, he has moved on from XXXX which, by necessity, is served ice cold to numb the offensive characteristics inherent in that brew.

But the Tooheys Old seemed to be dumbed down by being served so cold. I think it would have been much better at 4 - 5degC, not the obligatory 1degC XXXX temp in my mate's beer fridge, which is the most efficient fridge in his house!

You'd be better off closer to 10 degrees for an ale like that.

It should be served closer to the 8-10 degree mark. Ice cold Old doesn't do the beer any service. You lose that nice roasty malt flavour about it.

I'm drinking my Coopers Stout homebrew straight out the garage at the moment. It's prety cold in there though.

It's a lager isn't it? I don't think it's an ale. Anyway, who cares about Old anymore. The bastards ruined it a few years back.

Thanks guys,

My buddy will never store his beer at 8-10degC. Yes, Boonie's suggestion would work in summer, but not in a Toowoomba winter. Last Saturday at his place ranged between 2-8degC. The Old would have been flat before it got to 8degC. Come to think of it, it would have probably peaked at about 5deg before chilling again!

My buddy's automatic response when I arrive with beer is to put it in his fridge. I take it out! He puts it back in!

My solution? Drink slowly.

His response? He's a retired psychologist!

I prefer my Old about 4-5C. 1 degree is a but too cold, but 10 degrees os too warm in my book.
If you want the beer warmer, pour it into a glass. That gets the temp up quicker.

TO is a dark ale.

And yes, it definitely needs to be warmed up to 5 C or so or it's just no the same.
