50/50 Tooheys New/Old Clone?

Post by Heals »

I simply love that combination, 50/50 Tooheys New & Tooheys Old.

Has anyone tried to replicate such a flavor? Any suggestions?

That would impart too much bitterness in my opinion. Plus you wouldn't get the variety of a lager and an ale together. Which is rather tricky if you wanted to make it one go.

Best option would be to make a New style beer, draught kit and a brew enhancer and steep about 150g of Roasted Barley to give it that slight old taste.

Off the top of my head I would recommend doing a toucan brew, but using a can of Tooheys Old and a can of Coopers Mexican Cerveza. The Cerveza has no bittering component at all and is very light in flavour (and colour). This is good if you're worried about the bitterness of a toucan brew. The Cerveza kit also has a mixed yeast strain, being a lager and ale mix. So, theoritically, if you used the Cerveza yeast at the right temps (say 18C for week 1 and 10C for week 2 of fermentation) with this toucan mix you would get some of the ester production of an ale but also the fuller attenuation and flavour of a lager. Kind of like a cheat's Koelsch. The mix of a very light product with a dark kit should give you something like a 1/2 and 1/2 Toohey's Old and New. With this you could also top up to 25L as there would be more than enough malt extract to go around.
Prost!!!!!!!!!!!

Excellent suggestion wildschwein.

I'm all excited now, not sure if I should throw down my lager first or this toucan experiment! Quick trip to the HB store and I could do both, not sure what the olds will think of four fermenters out back though! Hahaha

Could anyone suggest a replacement to the Tooheys new can though, I've heard some pretty ordinary things about the Tooheys products. (Please feel free to tell me otherwise though...!)

The Tooheys Dark can is actually not bad and is at least as good as the Coopers IMO. The rest of the range is a bit light on for flavour they're OK as long as you hop them and use all malt.
