Munich Lager

Post by NTRabbit »

Just started a Munchen Helles tonight. At least that's what I'm calling it anyway, style sticklers would probably say otherwise.

Brewcraft Munich Lager
1kg LDME
15g Nelson Sauvin + 15g Saphire @ 15 minutes in 3L of water and the LDME
15g Nelson Sauvin + 15g Saphire dry hopped
Saflager S-23
Filled to 22L
OG 1.044

General Trade Perception beers of the variety Saphir are marked by a distinct harmonic bitterness of medium intensity. In smell the distinct aroma is defined by flowery and fruity impressions, in taste also by a hoppy tang
Possible Substitutions
Typical Beer Styles: This is a relatively unknown but up and coming new breed of hop that is starting to replace the Hallertaur Mittlefrueh variety which has become more and more susceptable to diasease and pests. Shares many of the Hallertaur Mittlefrueh characteristics and with a low alpha acid content is very well suited as an aroma hop for the finest European style lagers. The Saphir is a true jewel in the noble hop family and has a refined aroma and a mild flavor. This hop is distinguished by a sweet and clean citrus aroma that has a hint of tangerine. Try this in your finest German lagers, Pilsners, Belgian White, or even an English mild ale. "
Aroma Specification On a scale of 1 to 10 : flowery 4, citrus 3, fruity 4, current like 0, sweet 2, spicy 5.

Overall impression of character on a scale to 1 of 5: mild 4, harmonious 5, lasting full 5.

I got it from the same place I got the hops, http://www.craftbrewer.com.au

I could be wrong, but I believe Ross got the info from the nzhops website some time ago, which sadly is no longer anywhere near as informative as it used to be.

Didn't come from the NZ website as Saphire is a German hop.
It came from a very large pdf that's avaiable through the links section of my site. Gives a detailed analsis of a wide range of european hops.

Cheers Ross
