Storing Liquid Malt

Post by Pale_Ale »

Hey, how do you guys store your liquid malt in the event of not using the whole container or buying bulk? At the moment I just make sure I use it all, but if there's a no fuss way to store it I will.

I just pop the lid back on if it was a broken down bulk buy, or cover the tin in cling wrap. Never had a problem keeping it a couple weeks in the fridge like that.

Ok, in the case of a tin lid, I've heard it is not good practise with any food to keep it in the tin refrigerated after it's been opened, plus with that refrigeration it's going to solidify a bit more, I'd rather keep it in the cupboard.

I was thinking of using an airtight, foodgrade container, maybe spray with idophor. Any reason why this would be an issue?

I do believe keeping things in the "tin" is an old wives tale from back in the days when cans were actually made of tin and lead rather than steel, though this could be wrong.

I see no reason why moving the excess malt to a sanatised tupperware type container would be an issue.

The problem with putting tin in the fridge was that it would form a different allotrope of tin that was quite toxic. If you are using a product that is non tin, you really wouldn't have any problems, except for the fact that more bacteria live in your fridge than on your toilet.

I have done a few commercial cookery courses (although the work sucked so I didn't follow through), and our (I think it was hygiene) teacher told us that it's still a bad practice due to the oxidisation of the tin tainting the contents. So you're correct Chris.

Sanitise an airtight plastic container, dry it and put your liquid malt in and add a thin film of vodka on top. I use the pantry to store it {cool and dry}
{lite dry malt $6 kg. here, best price I`ve heard of :)}

only in very old tins where there is no plastic coating inside the tin. the only metal you expose to the food when opening the tin is the cut edge when you've pulled the ring-pull/used a can opener - and if you're using some of the malt, it's going to sit several inches away from that anyway :P

If I was close to a G&G I would pick up a sack of dry malt but my local only sells liquid in bulk, and at $3.17/kg it's worth storing it somewhere

Yeah thats the only drawback for us :(

This is part of the reason I switched to AG, the absolute cheapest I could buy any extract was to buy prehopped generic or Tooheys kits for $9 each, and there are only so many beers you can make from them, before you decide you need to widen your horizons.

Honestly if I could source dry extract for $6 per kilo I would give up on AG :o
