Best bands from _________
Best bands from _________
My previous music related question made me think of another one of my favorite pub topics Who is the best _______ (a nationality) rock band? NOT who is your favorite, try to be an objective observer; who has that combination of influence, success, timelessness, etc. that makes them stand out
I think Britian has everybodys asses kicked between the likes of Beatles, Stones, Who, Zeppelin, etc.
A few other nominees:
Australia: AC/DC (more international success) or Cold Chisel (huge popularity here)
Canada: The Tragically Hip (AWESOME!!!) or Rush (Pretty much the same arguments as AC/DC vs. CC, except reversed)
and now the tough one:
USA: ???
while there are plenty of fine bands, there aren't any (IMHO) that stand head and shouders above the rest like some of the ones listed above. I won't give away my nominees for this one just yet, it's always interesting to see what people come up with.

it may just be me but I'd have to put REM up there as a top act. Many faces/sounds but all great music!!
I'm also partial to some Red Hot Chilli Peppers

I love Oz rock.
I never really got into AC/DC, which is not to say I don't like them, just never listened much to them much.
Cold Chisel, Midnight Oil, Australian Crawl, INXS. Love them all. Not to forget The Angels.
Don't mind a bit of Violent Femmes either.
Cheers,
Oliver

The Hip are good, Rush yes Thank You (Bitar and the Snow Dog).
I would put Genessis up there, back in the Peter Gabriel Days, Peter Gabriel by himself to.
Springstein from the States guys,
Counting Crows are going great although I am somewhat worried with the Shrek 2 track
AC/DC, Put on the best show at SARS Concernt. Out did Mick and the boys. They will rate as one of the best
MatchBox 20, Bare Naked Ladies (another Canadian)
I was partial to the Eurogliders to although there was never really much to choose from in the 80's

But what I think the hip one is asking is what country has produced the best rock music. While he presents a good argument with England - the Beatles and the Stones and Led Zep, he is over looking the most important factor - the King, Elvis Presley.
And really, as much as I love(d) Australian music, America is where it all happened. From rock to motown to blues to whatever, you can't go past those yanks.

Been in Oz for nigh on 30 years and have to say that AccaDacca are up there with the best.My 20 year old nephew(then) and his mates took me to their concert a couple of of years ago and it was sensational.
Loved the idea that they would take an old fart along with them.
In a previous post i said I' d played in a band.We supported the Who,Yardbirds( Clapton and Jeff Beck)Small Faces,Them(Van Morrison)and Spencer Davis.Deep Purple were a support group to us one time when they were starting out(They were woeful then)
Bugger that lot except the Faces who really were a great bunch of guys.
Tightest band I,ve ever watched were The Hollies who's harmonies were brilliant.
Took the Missus to see them at the local club and told her not to expect too much but they were as good as.
Did see a band called Hawkwind at Sheffield VIc. who totally zapped me me but I think I was a bit of an "altered statesman "at the time.
I thought Elvis was a car!!!!!
Love Beethoven and didn't Clockwork Orange turn a few on???
Do not like rap.
Is there any track without a mutherfucking nigger reference in it???

Faith no More
All very good suggestions - but the Pyssedas family always has to have some Faith no More on the the go when brewing!

No, I wasnt really trying to figure out which country has the best music, that gets into some pretty patriotic arguments, just trying to get an international perspective on some other nations' bands, I threw some names out there to get things going and you guys have picked up nicely. I've had this conversation with lots of people and the result is different just about every time.
Elvis, springsteen, guns n roses, REM, CCR, Nirvana (highly influential in today's music) and Aerosmith typically tend to come up as those acts that stand out.
and I fogrot BNL from Canada, although their recent albums have me worried a little bit...

Does anyone listen to the Dropkick Murphys?
One of the best bands to drink to. A combination of punk and traditional celtic music from the Irish city of Boston! There aren't too many bands (especially punk) that have bagpipes in them! When in Melbourne last year they did a brilliant version of Long Way to the Top.
