You're meant to prune the late-appearing shoots so that the plant puts its effort into the main bines.

Yikes...

By the way, congratulations are due to everyone growing their own hops. There's some nice, healthy plants there.

Lachy, do you have a URL for that online store? I'm looking to get some horehound to do a horehound ale but it's hard to find these days.

I don't believe they have any horehound for sale, but the site is: http://www.shaman-australis.com.au/Webs ... ameset.htm

Edit: They also have hop plants for sale. If you don't mind buying plants that are "probably" PoR, then you can get them for $7.00 each, or 4 for $22.50.

You'll find them by following the links: Shamanics >>> E - O >>> Humulus spp.

Mine are all but dead :(

The Chinnook took off and grew about 1 foot then we had a month or more of almost non stop rain and the shoot died off.. :(

Not sure if the rhizome can be saved..

Looking good Lachy - my only concern is whether the varieties you buy from the non-HBS suppliers are ornamental (no flower) varieties.

My understanding is that the original supplier of the hops was a large commercial grower at Myrtleford, who grows hops primarily for CUB. I'm guessing they're not ornamental.

that makes it really likely that they're POR then i'd think.

Is everyone using their own hops only using them for flavour/aroma, or are you estimating the AA and using them for bittering.

Always wanted to grow some hops.

Does anyone have the contact details of the bloke in Tassie who sells Hops in April/May?

Any other sources of varieties of Hops plants someone can let me know about? We've been preparing the soil where we're going to put ours, and I've got room for 2 or 3 plants..... depends on ho close you can plant them to each other, especially given I'd like a couple of varieties....

I know Grumpys have rhizomes for sale.....

I think I'd like to grow either Cascade, Goldings, or Fuggles....

Anyone had sucess with cuttings? I buried about 4 half a foot long stems still connected to rhizome at the end of last season. Have 4 shoots about a foot away from main rhizome now!

If that guy's name is Stuart Fergason, then yes. He's my great uncle. I think he supplies rhizomes to G&G. He used to (maybe still is too?) be the president of some sort of hop growers association in Tasmania.

Just got back from Tasmania, and WHOA they grow a lot of hops there :D

pretty much all of my dad's cousins there have harvested hops, and I've received heaps of advice on how to grow them. Anyway, I don't think I needed much convincing, but I'll start growing hops for this season :D

My chinook is going berserk in the heat we are getting here. Spider mites are having a ball but some chill and garlic spray should fix there little red wagon. The cluster is now taking off and the cascade is slowly getting bigger (altho it is heavily shaded). No sign of either of my goldings plants. I hope they are growing the mother of all root systems beneath the surface for next years growing season. I was hoping for some fresh goldings flowers to dry hop ESB and IPAs.......

Hrm, I was all primed to look into getting a rhysome or 3 this year but that PDF suggests I am way too far north. :(

For those who have grown them & used the hops - how close to the initial type do they end up?
