Gotta claim some - riding my bike home last night. Got a couple of blocks from home and passed a place where they've just started some renovations. Big pile of junk out on the nature strip. Sitting right in the middle - a big box with 28 old longies. Mostly CUB, but there was one with a spade-like symbol (as in cards) with M.B.C.V on it. Anyway, I went back with the car and picked it up.

Mind you, not so much in the way of bragging rights now that the cooper's longies are roll-top, and 800ml. Still, it was free.

Have a question for you.

I do a bit of snorkeling off Black Rock in Melbourne and found the following:

Brown beer bottle of about 750 ml size
Has been made by joining the two halves together along the vertical seam
Very large logo ' MBCV ' on front in spade logo (The Manufacturers Bottle Company of Victoria)
I picked up the company name from your site but would be interested in its possible age. I am in no way a collector but thought I would give it to a mate who is a keen home brewer and likes beer memorabilia.

Any help you could provide would be much appreciated.

MBCV bottles were used from around 1907 to the late 1960's, from your description and with out a picture I say your bottle would date from 1910 to 1930, I beleive it is a crown seal bottle if you mate is going to use it for home brewing.

Not sure about that yet. I certainly haven't seen any 800mL Coopers bottles myself. Anyone?

Mine are all 750mLs and have a decent number of new ones when you got a free longie per carton of CPA..... If the bottles are 800mL you can bet there is still only 750mL of sweet beer in it!

I might be wrong, but I thought there was some patent issue on 750ml bottles, and CUB owned the patent, and the Coopers tallies were therefore *not* 750ml. That's why when you buy bottles, they're usually 640ml. Could be fuzzed out brain (small kids!).

Coopers tallies are 750 ml.
AFAIK, the only 800 ml tallies are the Sheaf Stout bottles.
The new tallies you buy from your HB shop are 640 ml, because the commercial breweries own all the design rights / patterns etc for the 750 ml bottles, and they will not allow the sale of new 750 ml tallies for homebrewers.

I went to Dan's this arvo, and can confirm absolutely that Coopers tallies are 750. There is even a CBES in the fridge because I felt bad walking out empty handed.
