I burnt the beer...

Post by Longbeach Brewer »

I put a brew on last week. Problem is, I burnt it...
Tipped the can, fermentables and a liitle water into a saucepan and onto the stove. Bubbled away for half an hour or so, and when I tipped it into the fermenter I realised it burnt the arse out of the bastard...
Carried on regardless, added the rest of the water, hops and yeast and let it ferment for a week (so far). Gravity has come down to 1006, but it's cloudy as buggery. Possibly cloudiness is due to the high ratio of light dry malt, but the brew is also very dark compared with previous similar brews and I'm worried that I've stuffed it up...
I WILL bottle it, 'cos I never throw anything out 'till I'm 150% sure it's stuffed, but is there any advice on possible fixes for my cloudiness problem before I do bottle it?
(Might do it on Sunday if I get a few hours to myself...)
Thanks, Chris

A bit of cloudiness never hurt anyone, just pretend it's a wheat beer and is meant to be cloudy. I'm having a Redback clone at the moment, bloody bewdifull!!! It's only been in the bottle 7 days as well.

What sort of brew is it?

I think you'll be right. It might have a burnt flavor to it and be darker than it should be, but that won't be the end of the world.

could try racking & using finings?..

in my experience the lower the gravity of the boil the harder it is to burn it..

OK, have racked the brew, and will leave for another week. Looks a little clearer now, hopefully will get better over the week.
The brew is my second go at a low alcohol beer. My first one was drinkable, but like most light beers, lacked flavour... This time I used the same base (Coopers pale ale), added 250 grams of Light Dry Malt and boiled it all up (this is where the burning occured...) Then dropped in a tea bag of POR hops (after boiling for about half an hour), made the whole lot up to about 23 litres.
I may try finings to clear it up, what's the go with them? I've never used them before as I've never had a problem with cloudiness. I'm usually complemented on my clear beers! So that's why I was a bit worried about clouds in this one...
Thanks fellas,
Chris

I wouldn't worry about the cloudiness. As has been noted, it should clear. Plus, it doesn't have any effect on the taste.
