Cooper European Lager

Post by red dog »

I have just bottled a European Lager from Coopers. its meant to be one of their newest kits to be aged for 12 weeks prior to drinking it. Has any one else tried this and what did they think of it?

I did one with a heap of Nelson Sauvin hops and fermented it with the 2001 Pils Urquell yeast. Have not tried it yet though...
Prost and happy brewing!

I'd like to give it a go too. Look forward to hearing how it turns out. I'd probably go the 2001 too Kev.

How did it go Kev?

I made mine with the kit, stock yeast, 1.5kg Morgans Pale liquid malt and no hops  .....just testing to see how it went against the Coopers Bavarian. rwh was going to do a side by side, but I did not have a can readily avaialble.

Out of the fermenter it was definitely different than the Bavarian. Better IMO as it does not have as much rotten egg gas smell to it which is the norm from the lager yeast and tasted quite nice, where the bav used to be better after 3-4 months minimum. It took longer to brew than anticipated even with higher temps ATM.

I made a 23 litre batch. 19 litres into the keg and the rest into longies.

Depending on your response Kev, I plan to add some NS hop to my keg, that my hbs kindly ordered for me :D .

Cheers

Boonie

Mine had too much diacetyl so I took the keg out, added 80g dextrose and the sachet that came with the kit. Gonna let it sit a couple weeks and hope the yeast can clean it up a bit more. It was a great drop, but will hopefully be better next time around ;)

That's a shame.

The kit yeast worked quite well.....finished at 1009. I forgot to take a SG, but that is the lowest beer reading I have had for a while......

What temp did you ferment at Boonie? Was it a fairly clean ferment?

It sat between 22-23 degrees. Was fairly clear when I racked to keg and bottled....not perfect, but I only get extremely crystal clear after more than 7 days then rack for 7 more.

Brewed last Monday Night, Wednesday night it was going off like a firecracker, Thurs night it was still bubbling and a little cloudy, Friday night it was clearing up, Saturday took reading 1009, Sunday took another 1009....keg and bottle the rest :D . It was alot clearer from Sat to Sunday...obviously time helps.

So basically it was only going for 6 days, but the yeast cleared well IMO.

Did you get a high level of esters at that temp? I would think 15C or so would be the max to have it finish like a true lager?

Surprisingly no.....

It does not have the crispness of a lager, mind you, I am drinking it at 22 degrees

Tasted tonight....nice mouthfeel, aroma still is overtaken by the lager yeast ''Eggish Smell", not overpowering though. Not a bad flavour, struggling to taste the hops ATM, maybe should not have had a GB first.

Quite nice for a kit and kilo of malt....better than Bavarian, similar but different.

Hops minimal compared to what I like  ...LCPA, JSGA etc...

Overall rating 9 out of 15 on the Boonie scale...yes 15 as it gives me more scope

I will give it another week in the keg and might add some NS.....cannot hurt

Cheers

I have sampled a few bottles and it needs to sit for a bit longer so I will have to resist the temptation of it all.

Sounds like it benefits from a diacetyl rest and lagering.

Thanks for the tips.

Looks like they replaced the Bavarian Lager with this one, might have to try it some time.

That's too bad about the Bav. I liked that one occasionally.
