I'm trying to work out a porter recipe using brewcraft ultra chocolate redwood ale
what malts can I use,do I need hops if what kind and for how long will I need extra cocoa powder any ideas?
any one used a kit for porters
Re: any one used a kit for porters
I don't know that kit, but...
You can use light, amber or dark malt for your brew, but I'd go amber personally. Consider some Weyermann carafa grain- it goes very well in porters.
As for hops, you can basically use anything at all, but I perfer brittish-type hops (fuggles, target, goldings, willamette etc). Perle works very well too.
Hope that gives you a staring point.

Re: any one used a kit for porters
Doesn't this kit come with two cans so you don't need to add any other malts, maybe not even hops. At about $40 for the kit it would want to be all inclusive, maybe only add some hops. There was some discussion on this kit a while ago. I wonder what it turned out like?
Re: any one used a kit for porters
I have that kit sitting at home and it does come with 2 cans, no need for extra malt, and it also comes with hops, and spec yeast, S04 from memory
Is it beer'o'clock yet
Re: any one used a kit for porters
my memory doesn't serve me well, the yeast is actually Safale US 05
