WA Boutique Brewers losing money

Post by James L »

guys,

I was reading the West Australian, and in the business section, it looks as though many of the boutique brewers in WA are losing serious money. There are three in particular that are in serious trouble.

Oz brewing who own Mad Monk Brewery in freo managed to lose 700K in the last 6 months.
Gage Roads Brewery lost 2M. in 6 months.
and Empire Beer Group who Own Colonial Brewing Co in Margeret River have managed to lose 1.1M in 6 months.

Lucky though, Little creatures has managed to make 1.8M and is planning and aggressive east coast expansion soon.

So drink up guys, we cant have them crying into their beers...

By making sub-par beer and selling it at a premium price, no wait, that is evidently how they MAKE money in the brewing buisness
Prost and happy brewing!

Scary isn't it. I've seen many businesses go under because they expand too quickly.....oh and bad management who only think of their bonuses.

I'd be shattered if LC went under. Considering the boutique beer market is expanding in Aus, it is quite surprising. I did read something somewhere though that there are about 4 that have the market share.

Cheers

Some boutique breweries would seriously be in trouble of over expansion. I'd put money on the fact that would be the problem with Gage Roads. I know in the past 2 years in Sydney they have advertised in the papers. Managed to push their beers into some of the chains and you don't do that without some generous sorts of payments or deal.

I don't know if any of you guys frequent the other homebrew boards, but on one of the other sites the head brewer from Mad Monk mentioned that he has left them due to personal reasons. Drop them a line as they may be chasing a new head brewer! Cheers
