equation for alc/vol

Post by Old Gil »

Just wondering how many ways (if more than one) there are to calculate the Acl/Vol and which is more accurate, I've come across a few recipes that don't add up according to strength (by the way I calculate anyway) which made me think if I'm calculating correctly or not. The equation I've been using is as follows,

OG - FG x 0.14 + 0.5

I suspect the kegging guys use a different calculation but i just wanted to throw it out there for us poor bottling people :)

Kegging just leaves off the '+0.5' at the end, as that is to account for the priming sugar.

See also this thread from a while ago.
