This is my first attempt at the plastic wrap cover instead of the lid and airlock.
I'm fermenting a wheat beer kit with a kilo of wheat malt extract, anyway the krausen has peaked above the capacity of the fermenter (35l).
Some of the krausen has run over the top and a bit has collected where the 'o' ring seals on the base of the threads. Is it best to leave it until I dry hop next weekend or is it important to replace the wrap and clean this up with a cloth soaked in sanitiser now?

Re: Glad wrap lid and big Krausen
Funny enough I had the same thing happen to me this weekend. I have been using glad wrap for a while now and never had a krausen go over. I used a sachet of Ross' new Munich yeast and it went off like Krakatoa!
I am going to wait for the krausen to start pulling back, I will then remove the glad wrap, clean around the top of the fermentor where it spilled over, sanitise and put fresh glad wrap on.

I take it you don't sanitise the glad wrap..................Kevnlis wrote:............ sanitise and put fresh glad wrap on.

What a job that would be!!!!!!!!

Re: Glad wrap lid and big Krausen

Re: Glad wrap lid and big Krausen
You raise an interest point through....We clean and sanitise the fermenter and tap like demons to minimise spoilage risk then place a non-sanitised plastic wrap over the fermenter mouth. And that cling wrap may have been sitting in a cupboard surrounded by microscopic spores and other airborne contaminants!!spatch wrote:I take it you don't sanitise the glad wrap..................Kevnlis wrote:............ sanitise and put fresh glad wrap on.![]()

Call me crazy, but I make sure that I use the "underside" of the gladwrap, ie, the side that faces down as you peel it off the roll.

Cheers,
TL

I do the same, and no I have never tried to sanitise and reuse the wrap...Trough Lolly wrote: Call me crazy, but I make sure that I use the "underside" of the gladwrap, ie, the side that faces down as you peel it off the roll.![]()

Re: Glad wrap lid and big Krausen
Yep, the face-down side is the inside of the roll. I reuse my gladwrap between primary and secondary as I consider that anything in there, is already in there.

As long as Glad Wrap is not made in China.
The spokesman from the company claims it is safe if you do not cook with it, but would you trust them? I am going to research, via the web, if it is really OK.

Re: Glad wrap lid and big Krausen
Bit of a side bar here.......... Sorry Greg
I cracked the lid on one of my fermenters and so decided to cling wrap the one that had a porter well into the post kraeusen stage. There was such a heavy aroma of the porter leaching through the wrap that I decided to finish it in the keg instead. Maybe just me but I don't like the idea of gases being able to so easily permeate (not that I mind a bit of oxidation in a robust porter
)
Cheers, Ed

Re: Glad wrap lid and big Krausen
As long as there is a positive pressure (outward) I'm not concerned. The CO2 layer will sit down on the gas-liquid interface anyway, so it doesn't bother me. I do know what you mean though.
