I'm so excited, one step up and cheaper....

Post by Clean Brewer »

Hello all,

Well, I am a little excited as I got my first delivery today from ross@craftbrewer.com

As ive said, I only started brewing mid-march and live on this forum, as with my order I got to start:

500gr Bairds Pale Cyrstal Malt
500gr Carapils Malt
500gr Carared Malt
90gr Cascade Hops
90gr Galena Hops
90gr Nelson Sauvin Hops
90gr Dsaaz Hops(all pellets)
4 packs Ale yeast
2 Packs Lager Yeast
and some zip lock pouches.

With just the yeast and hops I have saved $37 buying from ross than if I was to go to HBS and buy there yeast and the tea bag hops. Great saving I reckon and from what I here, much better quality....

I dont think local HBS sells grains but im sure that would be cheaper anyhow and only $8.70 postage by courier..

So now I start the next step from K&k and steep some grains etc and hop up some malt..

Cant wait to get into, if I didnt get onto this forum, there is probably no way I would have learnt so much from it in such a short time, thanks to everyone that has contributed to this site as its a wealth of information..

Cheers

Mate little by little is a good way to go

Buying all at once,is a sure relationship hinder.

I'm way to scared to add up what I've spent on brewing,as a cheap hobby

But spent what I wanted too, producing great beers.Once you have everything and use yeast slants ect.The price drops away
dramatically.

Oh, and I buy all my gear from Ross great prices, and great after/before sales advice 8)

Cheers hoohaa

I cant agree more, I have done costings on everything from equipment bought so far and ingredients and it still comes out cheaper than Commercial Beer especially when you don't get much for $40 a carton these days, and shit I smash commercial beer like there is no tomorrow.

Homebrew, I feel, has a bit more substance to it and body and you actually enjoy drinking it and dont smash it so easy..

Did that last night with a heap of cascade, perle, hallertau and simcoe plugs i had to rebag into smaller quantities. Almost took home the empty bags just to be able to sniff them every now and then......

I got my Mrs to smell the bag of hop pellets when I opened them.

She thought I'd bought a bag of Pot.. The smell is very similar.

What hops did you buy that smell like pot? Dont recall any that smell like that.

I was brewing a few weekends back right next to the backdoor. Partners sister came out and was so disgusted by the smell of boiling malt she ran back inside. She ran away even faster when i added the hops (cascade) despite the fact she is a fan of LCPA.

Yeah, it's a well-known effect in brewing circles: the fairer sex are often repelled by the smell of boiling hops. Perhaps that's why most brewers are men?
