Hi I am new to this liquid yeast thing! thought Id try culture a white labs oktoberfest lager yeast WLP820, with 1kg light liquid malt extract. I cooked it up with one litre of water or so. Let it cool overnight pitched the yeast at it this morning, stirred well let sit for an hour or two. Then split it into Grolsh bottles, I thought by now [about ten hours later ] they would have plenty of pressure to release??????? What have I done wrong????

Re: trying to culture liquid yeast
do a 1:10 malt to water... boi for about 10 minutes and cool.
If the yeast was fresh.. i would expect some action within 3 days... it is was old... it may take up to a week... any longer and i think it might be rooted.

I've had some cultures take about 2 weeks to fully get going.... Be patient.

I'd agree with timmy - depending on the temp. you have the bottles at, lager yeasts can take some time before they really get sailing. As a matter of practice, I always fit airlocks to liquid yeasts, and give the bottles a swirl every day.

Never used White Labs before. The wyeast packs have the instructions on the back so this many mistakes couldnt possibly happen if you are capable of reading.
1kg in 1L water. That would have been a bloody syrup. SG of 1.365

Lagerboy...click here for a good thread on (re)culturing yeast.
Welcome to the forum. A good idea before posting a question is to do a quick search up the top of the site......and especially before trying to reculture or make a starter.

I think i might have to retract my last statement...
I pulled a smack pack of 2112 cal lager out of the fridge that a mate had given me. it was supposed to be used before Nov 06... i smacked it about 2 weeks ago and nothing had happened...then i got home from work yesty, and the packet was puffed up like a balloon... It amazed me... i had given up on it... Now.. i can give it to my mates who want to make lagers but dont have the luxury of a brew fridge...
