is coopers yeast worth keeping

Post by bangers »

Hi guys ,
I just finished bottling a coopers Mexican Cerveza I did with Galina hops(I was told this is the hops used by corana) Anyways I decided to collect the yeast and try it later on an AG Cerveza that I was considering making. Most of the cerveza's I've looked at call for an American lager Yeast,my thinking is that since this kit is of a South Amreican style that maybe the yeast is of a strain from that region. Is it worth keeping or should I just ditch it and use the recomended yeast in the recipe? which is wyeast 2035 American Lager Yeast.

G'day mate,

As to the type of yeast included in the kits, check this thread out:

This question pops up a bit, and hence was made a sticky post.

It's certainly not a "special" yeast, and you'd probably do better to swap it out with one more in keeping with the style... If you're going AG for the Cervesa, definitely don't pitch the kit yeast... get the Wyeast 2035 and do it properly. I'd either boil the kit yeast and use it as yeast nutrient, or I'd use it to make bread or a pizza base.

That's what I'd do. Great nutrient, and bloody good damper!
