30grmms Northern brewer @ 60mins
30grms Northern brewer @ 15mins
30 grms Northern Brewer @ 1min
1 Whirl Tab @ 15mins
California Lager yeast dry or liquid???

That should be fine. If you have a smaller pot, leave out the LDME until the end of the boil. So, boil say 15L with the rest of the grains and hops and then tip in the LDME at the end of the boil. That will sanitise it and get you up to your target gravity once you add more water.

Can't comment on the dry vs liquid for that yeast but my experience is that liquid is normally better if you can cope with the extra work.

Cheers,

Tim

You would have to increase your hop amounts if you do a more concentrated boil. Check out this: Hops FAQ. Scroll down to the Tinseth method. Essentially, the more concentrated the wort, the more difficult it is for the bitter compounds from the hops to dissolve.

Your other option is to do a partial boil, that is, do a smaller volume but only add a proportional amount of LDME. For example, if you do a 11.5L boil, add only half the fermentables, say all of the 1.5kg pale malt with say 500g of LDME or something.

Er, have you run that through an IBU calculator? Sounds pretty bitter to me.

As far as I know California lager is only available as a liquid yeast. You could sub it with some other kind of generic dry yeast if you can't be stuffed frigging with liquid yeasts.

Steam beer...

Aim for SG between 1040-1055
FG between 1012 and 1018
IBUs between 30-40...

Aparently Northern Brewer is the hop of choice, and i think you're going to have to get yourself some Cal Lager Yeast 2112 if you dont already have some.

what aa % is the northern brewer you have? we might be able to work out the IBUs for you.

ok i had a look at the recipe on that website...

your version looks ok... except they only ask for 0.03lb of chocolate which works out to be about 15-20g of chocolate... it looks as though they are only adding it for colour... so i would reduce the ammount that you are going to add...

also, when you buy your northern brewer you'll need to work out the bitterness depending on the aa% of the hops that you buy...

also as the other guys said, your bitterness will depend on how you boil it (malt/water ratio). so you'll need to tell us how you plan on doing it, and we'll go from there...
