Sodium meta bi-sulphite
Sodium meta bi-sulphite
Hi all, I have about 8kg of SMBS, which unfortunately has got wet in the recent storms we've had here. I am trying to dry it out, not a lot of success so far as it's still pretty humid. My question is, is it still usable once it has been properly dried out? TIA.

Re: Sodium meta bi-sulphite
Never used it in any of my recipes, so I can't help you. Sorry.
By the way, how's it taste?

Re: Sodium meta bi-sulphite
Its not 100% Na2S2O5 anymore but does that matter......
When added to water the following reaction takes place.
Na2S2O5 + H2O ---> 2NaHSO3
So whether you add it to water or water adds itself you will end up with the same chemical.
So you can still use it no problem!

yeah my parters dad has a barrell of the stuff for cleaning his kegs when he "racks" his wine, this pretty much got 1/4 filled with water the other month by accident, dried it as best as he could and still works fine, he loves the stuff even more now after its shown its "resiliance"

Dont breath the crap in its toxic, i stopped using it years ago for this very reason, there is alot better alternatives out there but i suppose if you have heaps of it then go for it just be aware that its not nice stuffskurvy84 wrote:yeah my parters dad has a barrell of the stuff for cleaning his kegs when he "racks" his wine, this pretty much got 1/4 filled with water the other month by accident, dried it as best as he could and still works fine, he loves the stuff even more now after its shown its "resiliance"

Re: Sodium meta bi-sulphite
I use it for fruit drying..... got a few kg. Should last a while (2tbsp per kg of fruit).
i have 5kg of figs drying at the minute. Despite their high cost ($5 at my local greengrocer in packs of 4) i havent been able to give them away!
Not the nicest stuff but compared to chemicals i deal with on a day to day basis its harmless

I deal with this stuff at work in 200lt barrels and yeah, it clears your sinuses out if you get a whiff!!
I personally dont use it for brewing though.
