Dodgy Smell
I bottled a Malt Shovel Summer Wheat Beer today and noticed while doing this, a pretty average smell. It also had that band-aid taste I have read about on the net. The fermenter had a dark scum ring around the top of it as well. One of the sites on the net said this sort of taste is common with wheat beers but also said it could be caused by contamination after not rinsing properly after using bleach cleaners. I used Neo-Pink to clean my fermenter. Hopefully nothing is wrong and I haven't wasted my time. Has anybody else experienced this taste and smell in their brews? By the way here is the link to the site I was getting info. off. http://www.homebrewzone.com/phenols.htm

Currently (Kit) Lager Brewing in the Canberra cold and have three fermenters going with different versions. Have noted from some posts and notes that a rotten egg/ sulphur smell can occur with some lager yeasts/lager brews. Please - this just doesnt seem right - what is the chemistry that makes this occur?
In tracking the three brews down at the moment I only have the eggy odour from the Coopers Bavarian with the Coopers dry kit yeast - it definitely smells like eggs/sulphur and is quite funky. The Morgans Lager with the Morgans Lager Yeast smells just fine and the other is another Coopers Bavarian with Saflager which smells sweet as well. The additives I have used are just LDM, Dex, Hop packets and Liquid Malt Extracts. So I think I have narrowed it down to the Coopers Lager (Pilsenser) Yeast? The temp is constant 14 deg C. Comments? Its all going under the house till summer so will be interesting to see what comes out.....

I thought the morgans lager might just be ale yeast but the packet says "lager yeast" and more importantly the packet states to brew it down to 15 deg. Like I said it was a constant 14 deg and it fermented strongly. I can only assume they use a lager yeast - which one I dont know. I'll go to their site and ask a q.
