Hydrometer Question

Post by Bigbott »

Hello fellow brewers,

This may be a silly question ??

We put down 4 brews yesterday  & one of the readings we got was a bit out of the ordonary,

It was our last brew a Tooheys Special Larger kit with 850g dextrose,650g maltodextron,S-23 lager yeast not the kit
yeast & a tea bag of 12g Cluster hop pellets (usa),

The Hydrometer is calabrated @ 20 deg so after filling to 23lts & adding the hops we took a reading before add
the yeast & it was 1100 !! :o ,

I thought whats the go here the last 3 brews where about right & this one has blown out ?? :!:
or should we have done something different ?? ive never had a high reading like this,

I ran it through the brewraft Brewers calculator & it should of been Original SG - 1.051 & Final SG - 1017 = 5.1%,

I said to my mate bloody hell what have we got here rocket fuel !! 8)

Cheers Rob.

I'd say you didn't stir as much and you have taken the reading when a lot of the more pure malt was sitting in the tap blowing out your reading.

Even if you did stir well it is pretty easy for goop to sit undisturbed in the tap while everything else is spinning about. If this happens again take another reading, you'll find the second is closer to the mark (personally, I tip the first 1/4 cup when taking OG for kit/extract brews).
