Black Floaties

Post by pmclaren11 »

Hi all,

I have been storing 2 kegs at a time as my fridge only fits 2. I burp them and store them for a month or 2 until needed.
However, I have noticed these kegs seem to be pouring at the beginning and end of the keg some sort of black bits or floaties.

The beer tastes fine, I have cleaned my lines etc and it only seems to occur with these kegs I have stored.

I sanitise my equipment and kegs throughly each time. Could it be the water I'm using (tap water) or temperatures?

Has anyone else come across this and have any solution? As I said, the beer still tastes fine but it's annoying!

Cheers.

Had the same thing, Did the same thing.
What finally resolve the problem was pulling the pouring tap apart and giving it a good clean.
Cheers

Yep, it was the tap as you said which is a relief.

I pulled it all apart and was horrified at how much black build up was in there!

Any tips on how to get all of it out as some areas you cant scrub?

I just pulled the tap apart, and found everything easy to clean. Didn't find any difficult bits to get into

I try not to drink during the week so at the end of the weekend i flush the lines with my phos acid solution. I leave this in the lines until the next time i want beer. This seems to reduce the amount of build-up in the taps and they are easier to use.

I still pull them apart twice a year as well as the keg posts etc and clean everything thoroughly but not leaving them for days full of beer helps to reduce the amount of cleaning necessary.

I have enough (i think) kegs so 1 is for cleaning only.

I swapped my Micro matic taps to Perlicks, makes a huge difference to the black build up.
