best brew
Re: best brew
Is the yeast you used an abbey strain
I don’t have the wyeast list with me
Sounds like a really intense beer and @ 1077 og must have finished around 7.5 plus% a/v
They used to be my session type of beers but now as older age creeps on it is harder to fire up the next day hence the step back to 4.8%ers
Did you manage too stash some bottles away for extended conditioning if you have you will be surprised at how different flavor profiles develop with this type of brew
As interest did you prime with dextrose or some other medium
Thankyou for your post

Welcome to the internet.speedie wrote:I don’t have the wyeast list with me
No he won't because this isn't his first brew.speedie wrote: you will be surprised at how different flavor profiles develop with this type of brew

Also, he can't even see your questions, let alone answer them, as he has already mentioned that he has you on ignore.
Re: best brew
LOL
I can only imagine what else was posted
but I've learnt tabs are great for finding info whilst other pages are open
Novice internet users can learn a lot from internet experts like myself
Should of submitted this brew in VICBREW rather than my other Belgians and doppelbock. ahhhh hindsight and a bit of extra conditioning.
I'm going to give Warra's middy a try soon, cheers mate for the recipe and tips

You keep posing questions of somebody who has blatantly stated that they have you on ignore. He cannot see anything that you post.speedie wrote:so did you put any bottles away for long storeage?
Re: best brew
I can see when you quote people though Bullfrog AND
IN BOTH POSTS I state that I bottled half the batch
IN BOTH POSTS I state that I bottled half the batch

And I agree with the good Dr. He has many variations and myself like others have taken his original recipe and modified it ourselves as well over time giving back feedback when we do like I did with my pacman variation.I must say though that the bottle conditioned versions are out doing the kegged versions at the moment. I kegged 10L's of it and bottles the rest just for comparison. Think I'll bottle the entire batch next time.

drsmurto, why do you assume that it's YOUR golden ale that is referred to here, hmm?drsmurto wrote:Why is my golden ale excluded? Do you have all the variations of that recipe?speedie wrote:Would any of you gun brewers be willing to post your best brew formulas

Someone, somewhere must have brewed an original golden ale recipe, completely uninfluenced by this mighty brew? *Looks around scratching head* No one? DSGA has obliterated the competition!

Re: best brew
I'm guessing we'll have to wait many years until doc dies to get the final most tweaked recipe.speedie wrote:supply your final! most tweaked the one you will brew over and over recipe

Or I suppose we could actually read the relevant threads and comments and choose a recipe??
Re: best brew
I actually do have a house Golden Ale that was uninfluenced by the good Doctor's recipe. I currently have my first ever DSGA in primary so that I can see how mine measures up against, but mine was just me buying ingredients on a whim when I was in the LHBS. Much more time and thought has gone into the Doc's brew so I'm sure it will come out the winner.squirt in the turns wrote: Someone, somewhere must have brewed an original golden ale recipe, completely uninfluenced by this mighty brew? *Looks around scratching head* No one? Re: best brew
i made my owned golden ale, just loosely based on the docs recipe...
i removed 10 grams of base malt from his recipe, and now its mine, and i'll take all the credit
my mates love the stuff, and so do I,
(i do pass on the credit to the doc each time when asked what its made of)

Aaah, reduced alcohol golden ale.Grog wrote:

Re: best brew
Good point, Earl. You'd be better served to add 10gms instead like in my copyrighted recipe, Grog. Golden Rocketfuel.
(I don't actually do this)

Re: best brew
I'm sure DrS' Golden Ale, in whatever form it takes, deserves a very very honourable mention in any best brew discussion. It's been brewed by many brewers, both in AG and partial etc form, and it gets the thumbs up from all concerned, both on this and other forums.
DrS certainly has my respect in continuing to tweak his favourite recipes to reach his nirvana with those brews.
Having said that, I confess I've never brewed it. JSGA is not one of my favourite beers. I just do not like Amarillo hops, but that's just my personal taste. However, many brewers seem to rave over the hop. I have the same feeling about Nelson Sauvin. Maybe each of these hops remind me too much of my most disliked white wine, which is Sauvignon Blanc. Give me a fresh young Riesling in it's first year or so, or a well aged Riesling (8 years up), or a 10 to 15 years old Hunter Semillon, and you will win me.
I guess that's the beauty of homebrewing, you can brew to your personal taste, and no one is there to tell you it's "wrong", "unbalanced", "too much body", "too thin", "too hoppy", "too much or too little alcohol", "too malty", "too bitter", etc etc. Unless you brew for competitions, which is something I've not done to date.

Re: best brew
Too right Warra, no use make medal wining beer you don't actually like. Medals are just a bonus.
After all my problems bottling it from keg my doppelbock got 8th at Vicbrew but only 5pts separated me and 6th so I'm not too upset. Didn't expect to do any better considering it was my first time using a lager yeast and its the first doppelbock I made up using my own thoughts on what it should be. Will be interested to see the notes on where they thought it went wrong and no doubt carbonation will be on the list. Still on tap here its what I want out of a doppelbock
I've used DSGA as a starting base and experimented slightly with the grain bill, hops and yeast to make beers more suited to my taste. It also accelerates the learning process and Doc made it easier from the start. I'm a tinkerer and more often than not I'll make a small change to each successful recipe I have come up with.
As the guys pointed out when is a recipe not your recipe? I might slightly change the grain bill but if I use a diff yeast, different hops varietys at different amounts etc is it really still mine? I say it is
Its just always better to start with a solid base of something that you know works, taste it, hone it to your tastes and go from there.

Re: best brew
A similar (but relevant given the context) question is "when is a golden ale no longer a golden ale?" Rye and Chinook?! Time to stop resting on your laurels and give the poor beer a new name, DrS!chadjaja wrote:As the guys pointed out when is a recipe not your recipe?
Re: best brew
Would you please post the most revered ale in Geoff and Ollies Site?
Is it the use of all those caramel type malts that make it so desirable or maybe the ale yeast that has been pushed towards the top end of ester production?
So good DR if you would be so kind as to post this most elite brew formula I would be willing to push it into upper liter limits to see if it is well received in the west
Waiting with baited breath
Speedie
Ps no need to scale it as I have a pencil and calculator on hand
Pps no snide comments from the bleachers please!!!!

This one had so many ripper reviews that I had to give it ago but gee I gotta say I was disappointed after trying them at the 4 weeks stage.
Not sure as to why, probably just not my cup of tea (hophead).
I'm about to try another now after 3-4 months in the bottle.
Hoping that it's improved.
