I hadn't drunk a VB in ages, but on the weekend I rode my motorbike two hours to Melbourne in over 30o heat. When I got off I was handed a cold VB and it went down as if it was the best beer on earth.
Sometimes they're good sometimes they're awful.

Someone once told me Crownies are the top 30% of the Fosters vat
Nope...............
The whole vat is exactly the same quality, not like the good stuff rises to the top & the crap sinks to the bottom

yeah it wasnt that long ago when i swore by it. thank god my cuz got me drinking strongbow, else i may have began to think coldies were good. a bloody lot of my mates do...
I can go one step worse, a couple of my mates who live for carlton cold think they are a bit the beer conesuir (sp?) Make me feel like swatting them with their empties.
corks wrote:yeah and whats with crownies? did they used to be good once? being a young-un they've been terrible for as long as i can remember...
I always hated them as well but vb/carlton cold drinkers swear by them. I actually tend to think of them as vb with a high price tag :p

Crownies are the most overpriced beer in the country. I remember reading an article in the business section about how Fosters can credit a rise in profits in Australia due to the increase in the purchase of premium beers such as Crownies. The only way they can credit that as a rise in profits is if it costs the same, maybe a little more, to make and they are marking it up a whole lot.

Thats the best and most sensible post yet on this thread. Loved it.
I reckon as a beer, in general V.B. is bloody awful as compared to many other good beers.
But ice cold, on a hot day after a day out crabbing. VB goes quite nicely with some fresh Blue Swimmer Crabs......after three or four the taste melds in with the crabs, then three or four more coldies....and youve had a top day !!

Can someone please explain what is going on? I'm guessing you guys have sent Dogger a load of Aussie beers to try?

I think someone sent Dogs a VB ex0ja, because he's been very curious on its bad ratings for quite some time.
Its definately a beer that needs to be ice cold, and not to be had with any other beer.
But it has its uses. When i go fishing or crabbing with a mate, its all he drinks, so i have to join in. It does its job as a hot day killer, and who'd be without a beer after a day in the boat.
Having said that, when i want to enjoy a real beer, its a home brew, or a Coopers. Or something classier

Grabman promises the rest will be better like they've also sent him some other beers to try though.
I've got a fridge full of Crown Lager and a few VBs. These are all from Christmas presents etc. and I end up just saving them all up in the fridge as I don't want to drink them. Right now I have no home brews left, I still have a few more days until I will have anything drinkable. I'm also flat broke so can't go out and buy any decent commercial beers. Subsequently I've been drinking a few Crown Lagers lately, let me tell you they can be quite hard to get down at times. I tried one of the VBs last night for a change and to me it was much better than the Crownies. Don't get me wrong though, the VB is still crap.

If I may just hijack the thread for a minute...going out and catching swimmers is the craziest thing I think I have ever done!
Story? Visited some old bloke in S.A. while we were visiting some rellos in Adelaide, he says, "going out crabbing...wanna come?" So I say yes, thinking we're gonna go out in a boat, drink some beers, drop some traps, go in, drink some more beers, go out pull up the pots, drink more beers, cook up the crabs...drink more beers and fall over!!!
Now...this guy was like 70 odd, he drives us out to somewhere near Ardrossan (funny how some names stick in the head!)...but there's NO BOAT!!!!
This pensioner hands me a grass rake...a big floating bucket with a rope and some booties. I gear up and he says, "Follow me."
Now being a bit of a young smartarse in my 20's I think it was then I think, "Hell yeah I can keep up with some old bloke!"
Well half way out into the bloody Great Australian Bight I'm shown how to actually catch blue swimmers and told to watch out for fins.
FINS?!?!??!?!
Oh yeah the Great White Capital of Australia! (I hope sharks aren't attracted to poo!)
So I spend the rest of the day shitting myself, catching crabs (in a good way!), getting sunburnt from the waist up(I'm tough...who needs sunscream!) and chafing the bejeesus out of my crotch! All the while this old bloke is 200 metres in front of me and always seems to be waiting for me to catch up!!!!
We stop at the Ardrossan Pub on the way home, my tub is full of crabs, I have some beers (I needed them) but neglect to have a piddle before we leave. By the time we get back to the old blokes house, I'm chafed, burnt and bloated! Walking like I've ridden a horse with no name and everyone's laughing!
I have a shower and the old bloke's boiling up the crabs on the greatest set up I've ever seen for cooking seafood, throws me a homebrew and says, "Whaddya reckon about that?"
Well bugger me! it's the best beer I ever tasted, but I can still tell it's a home brew! We spend the rest of the day cooking and eating crabs...and drinking beer...
Will I ever go crabbing again? No bloody way! I hate sharks!
Were they the best crabs I ever ate?? Hell yes!

And i can guarantee a feed of 40 big fat juicy Blue Crabs, cooked fresh in salty seawater, and washed down with an ice cold Coopers or HomeBrew.
Geez lifes good !!

I have to confess that I downed a fair bit of the stuff when collecting king browns for HB.
