A mate just offered me a c02 bottle he has has in storage for 3 years and says it's probably close to full.
Does it go stale?
I'm sure if needed I could dump and get refilled although it would be a waste if I didn't need to.

The gas will be fine, the only thing to check will be the date on the bottle, it might need to be re-certified on your next fill....
