Homebrewing a Hahn Premium style?

I'm a newbie to homebrewing and this forum (and a Yank) so please be gentle. :wink: Ah, hell, beat me senseless - I can take it. :lol:

It doesn't seem that Hahn Premium is high on your list, but I really liked it when I had some on tap in Melbourne a couple of years ago. I'm a newbie extract homebrewer and am looking for recipes and tips for brewing a Hahn Premium style.

I've found Morgan's Aussie Lager, Wala's Lager, or Morgan's Blue Mountain Lager extract recommended. Any suggestions on which yeast to use? Also, I've found recipes listing hersbrucker hops (Std. Method) but also found someone mention that Hahn Premium uses NZ Super Alpha. Can anyone provide any insights on that. Also, they say hops "late in the brewing process" - which means late in the BOIL or late before bottling? (I told you I was a newbie) :oops:

Also, I believe that the Blue Mountain Lager is a pre-hopped extract. Does using a pre-hopped extract affect how much hops you use later, or is that taken into account in the recipe?

ah you have done your homework :wink:
super alpha are quite high in alpha acids - around 11-13% from memory. its mainly used for bittering (& one that chuck likes to use quiet abit it seems). & it is similar to hallertau. i'd be inclined to go with the hersbrucker. late in the brewing process could either mean late in the boil or dry hopped. i'd probly try 10-20g in the fermentor, using a lager kit with a dex/dme mix

I actually rate Hahn Premium fairly highly. Certainly above Cascade Premium and much more highly than Boags Premium (which I reckon is one of Australia's most overrated beers).

Anyway, I've no experience brewing a clone. But the Thomas Cooper's Heritage Lager might give you something close. Don't use the 1.5kg liquid malt as per the recipe though. Try perhaps 750g dextrose and 500g light malt.

And some Hersbrucker hops could certainly help things along. Say 15-20g boiled with a little malt for 10 minutes then strained into the fermenter.

I haven't used the Morgan's Blue Mountain Lager, so can't pass judgement.
