Post by NickMoore »

Hi, can anyone recommend a good HBS. I'm pretty sure I can do much better than my local at Kedron.

thanks ... NICK

Nick, the one on Ipswich Road Annerley has been fine by me. Helpful when I ask questions. Has several pre-mixes of fermentables. Lots of variety in stock. The shop has character as well. I have no affiliation, just shop there.
Take the Juliette St exit from the freeway, left on to Ipswich Rd, he is at the top of the hill on the left.

Whether it is better/worse than the one at Kedron will be your decision. I haven't been there.

Nick,
I thought the HBS at Kedron was not too bad when I paid a vist at the beginning of the year. On the north side there is also one at Chermside and one at Gaythorne.

Cheers

Kmart at Chermside has Cooper's micro kits at an $11 discount. From memory, $63.50-ish from $74.50-ish.

Original series were also $9, about a $1 off.

Not sure how long for.

Annerly's pretty good. Chapel Hill's pretty good, if you can get past the owner's attitude. He's keen but can be a bit patronizing. I went over the Gaythorne last weekend ands was dissapointed. Incrediblly small range.

fair enough steve, maybe I've just caught them on bad days ...

They said they don't stock liquid yeast because "there's only so much you can do for the general public".

Said they had no plans to stock Safale US-56 because "it's too hot here in Brisbane". They do, however, stock S-04, which has the same recommended brewing temp range.

They recommended Fuggles as a substitute for Northern Brewer as a bittering hops in a American Pale Ale.

I told them I was looking for some specialty grains to steep. they sold me some base malts, and a hop bag in which to steep them for 30 mins.

Overheard them telling a customer there's no need to rehydrate dried yeast "and anybody who tells you otherwise doesn't know what they're talking about".

Don't give receipts for under $30 "unless you ask for one".

When my 8-month-old son reach for a grain bag, attendant said, "don't put holes in my bags sonny, or I'll put a hole in yours".

Like I said, maybe I just caught them on bad days but I won't be causing their tills to ring again.

What an arse pick. That would be the last thing he did in this life

I wouldn't shop there just on principle.

No one speaks to my children that way..... thats my right.

I agree about the HBS at Annerley - nice folk - open until 12 noon on Saturday (sometimes a bit later depending on trade).

Kedron HBS

Post by Feebles »

Nick I just went there for the first time on Saturday 21/01 and really found them very helpfull. I asked them questions about everything I could think would help me and they perservered with me.
I am dissapointed that this was your experience and i will bring this to their attention regarding this incident.
The one in Gaythorne will not be helpful at all as they closed down in stafford after taking over from a successful business.
I will visit the annerly one to see what they are like.
By the way I was talking to a young guy ( From Sth Africa) at Kedron and he was very helpful but I think he only works during the week.
Cheers
