Growing Hops

Post by JubJub »

Has anyone tried growing their own hops? If you have, how did you get the seeds. I would have to imagine that fresh hops would be something special.

If you want to grow your own hops, you get them in rizome form. Fresh hops are good, but you usually need to dry them prior to use.

I think you may JUST be too late to order for this year, but you MAY be able to get them from grumpys.com.au

Thanks, checked out those links. Heres me searching for Hop seeds and turning up blank. Was talking to one of the blokes at work about these risome / root / bulb things. He said on a trip to Victoria or something some years ago there were hops growing like weeds beside the road. Beats paying $37.50 for the back end of a weed. :D

Anyway thanks for the feedback, will keep an eye out next year. Would be good to find some saaz. They seem to be little harder to find.

Hops grow in the ACT? Are those the hops used in Eisbier?

Canberra suits hop growing ..day length, rainfall, soils (according to the ACT brewers club newsletter on hops...sorry I don't have an electronic version).
Othe facts:
Needs plenty of light, support structure, good drainage, 6.5-8 ph of soil. Prone to mildew ( like zuchinis). 1st year growth is minimal, so you need to be patient. Under good conditions they produce 250-1000gms of dried flowers per plant.

With the huge variety of hops out there, I'm sure there will be quite a few that will grow well. What types are available from your HB guy?

You would have to give him a buzz.

He ordered from somewhere else...ended costing me $24 a rhizome.
He didn't have access to Saaz, but he had a heap of German sounding ones that I wasn't all that familiar with...although..., my hop was supposed to be a Hallertau, but it had another name. Something to do with it being grown in the US so had to re-name it (a bit like champagne?)
I would imagine that there must be heaps of hop growers in Canberra in the Brewers club that swap rhizomes each year.
