Priming Grolsch bottles

Post by Anzac Cookies »

I am planning to bottle using the 473ml Grolsh bottles. My question is how much dextrose to use for priming each bottle? Or if i was to use carbonation drops would one be sufficient ?

Best thing to do is bulk prime especially when you're unsure! I dont think one carbo drop would do it but two would probably be too much, do a search in here on bulk priming and i'm sure you will find that its actually very easy and stress free procedure!!

4 grams of sugar from personal experience. One carb drop not enough, and two is far too much, once again, from personal experience.

Bulk prime at the rate of 4g per swing top, or do some surgery on a tallie sugar measure so it holds 4g instead of the original 6g.

Hope this helps.

I have a sccop from brewcraft which has measures for 330ml, 500ml and 750ml - I use the 500ml measure for the 483ml grolsch bottles

I use a heaped half teasoon worth of dextrose for priming each of my Grolsch bottles, and a flat half teaspoon worth to prime the 375mls.

No problems priming this way yet. They carbonate nicely and aren't too fizzy - hooray!

I can only echo Lethaldog and put another vote in for bulk priming.

The added benefit to bulk priming is that it doesnt matter what size bottle you use so it just so much more efficiant

Just tried bulk priming for the first time today.

Don't know why I didn't do it earlier.
I left my fermenter in my other pants

Cheers m8, takes all the guess work out. I currently have a Hoegaarden clone on the go, hope it all turns out. I entered the following into the calculator

Desired CO2 - 2.6
Beer Temp - 22 C
Volume - 23 litres
Priming Ingredient - Cane Sugar (is this the one to choose if i am using Dextrose???)
Residual CO2 - 0.81
Priming Sugar Required - 165g

Does all this seem to be OK?

Depends on personal preferences.

Me, I would work on 8g/L, or 184g for 23L. Not a great deal of difference, one way or the other.
