Government scare tactics
Government scare tactics
tonight on the news they are saying drinking even 1 beer a day will increase your chance of cancer by 11%.
The salvation army wants warning labels on beer containers as they do on cigerette packets.
Is this just another brainwashing new world order tactic thing by the government to stop drunks or what, becuase beer is just 98% water and all it can't be that bad

As we all have cancer in us im guessing almost anything we put in our bodys could possibly set it off
As im a smoker im not to concerned about my beer im sure the durrys will get me first

A woman walks into a bar and orders a double entendre, so the bartender gave her one !
Just watch out for that Peanut Butter, it causes cancer. Aluminium causes, um ,um ,um ,um what do you call it oh yeah Alzheimers.
Dont breath now as there is CO2 in the air
Give me a break.
My old smoked for 43 years and finally gave it up, and that was at over a pack a day, not the pussy smokes either, Rothmans and Winfield Reds. Now tell me that they cause Cancer. My old man is a living specimen.
All this typing and I am an ex-smoker who is supposed to whinge about smokers?
As people have said on this thread, we are born with it, just like Meningicoccal at the back of our throat.
My liver will pack it in before the Cancer gets me

11% greater than what? How many people in their control group drank?
There have been studies on coffee that showed similar results. Fortunately, some smart guy looked through the data collection methods and found that they didn't control for smoking.
Now I'm not saying that alcohol is totally safe, anyone who lives under that dillusion will have their genes removed from the pool early, but there are often flaws in studies like this.
For example, with these coffee studies, they later found that out of everyone taking part in the "experiment," ALL of the smokers were in the coffee-drinking group. Does that seem surprising? I mean, it's pretty hard to find a smoker who doesn't drink coffee (or alcohol for that matter), not that it's impossible though.
As for me, I love my beer and my coffee, but only have a bit each day, and sometimes I stick with un-enhanced water. Alcohol abuse is a big problem, and of course the risks need to be expressed so people can make informed descisions. But scare tactics are unnessisary.

I left my fermenter in my other pants
Im guessing your a smoker blandy
Good point though m8, you really have to take into account alot of factors, even the suburbs ppl live in could mean they are a greater risk, of the studies i would really like to know how many were smokers, lived in citys also what there eating habits are like, if they drink coffee or tea, how many use drugs, prescription or otherwise etc etc.
Also id like to ask if anyone else has noticed that all of these rediculous claims only ever come to light at the end of a financial year
I think that maybe government funding could possibly have something to do with this maybe

Every time I drink beer, I know it's probably cutting my life short by a few seconds.
Does that make me want to stop? f--- No!
You can go through life concerned with all the terrible effects that drinking alcohol and live a boring life.
Having fun and enjoying some of life's pleasures may take about 5-20 years off the end of your life, but were you really going to do anything with those years anyway?

I've just had to do lots to statistics in my Engineering/Commece degree and I understand how you can get f@#$ed up results if you're not careful.
BTW, I've got a friend doing a viticulture (sp?) course ATM. He told me that one of their tutors gave advice to the smokers in the class to quit. Not for health reasons, but because it wrecked their tastebuds and they couldn't taste their wine properly.
Anything that will significantly lower my appreciation of beer is definately out for me.

Each to their own as to how they enjoy it to

Any half decent spin doctor can make the statistics say what ever you need them to say.
Being alive is a terminal disease.
There appears to be enough evidence to indicate that moderate consumption of beer and wine is beneficial to ones health.
I'll take my chances with the beer.
Smokes on the other hand, there is no evidence to indicate any health benefits, and a whole bunch to indicate they are bad for you.
Cheers,
Greg

We are all here (on Earth) on temporary visas. We should all make the most of our time here, on the proviso that we do not deprive others of the same rights.
The "do gooders" cannot "see the wood for the trees", but most of them are employed in government funded growth industries, and will not go away! Dammit! To their chagrin, most of their fellow citizens, in their blissful ignorance, simply ignore them.
I am often tempted to do battle with these "do gooders", and then I think why? What is the point? Absolute waste of time, so I have another HB. Or a glass of wine. Or a Cuban (or Central American) cigar.
Going to have another HB right now.
